Maybach, the pinnacle of German luxury sedans. A newly revised model with updated specifications and equipment was recently announced, with orders commencing on July 22, 2010. Deliveries are scheduled for Spring 2011.

Improved Fuel Efficiency for the New Maybach



In addition to the Maybach 57, 57S, 62, and 62S lineup, the news this time is the addition of the "Maybach Landauer," an open-top limousine with a soft top for the rear seats. Its unveiling in Japan was hosted by Mercedes-Benz Japan at Odaiba, the venue for the "Tokyo Concours d'Elegance 2010."

Maybach once vied for the super-luxury car market in Germany alongside Mercedes in the 1920s and 30s. The current Maybach was revived in the 1990s by Mercedes-Benz, its former rival. This minor change sees the 57S and 62S boast an 18ps increase in maximum output to 630ps, while also achieving improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions. Previously, 16.4 liters of fuel were consumed per 100km; the new model improves this to 15.8 liters.

Not Just Increased Power, But a Refreshed Design



The lineup of the new Maybach models is organized as follows.
The "57" and "57S" feature a body length of 5,734mm on a 3,390mm wheelbase. In contrast, the "62" and "62S" have an even longer wheelbase of 3,827mm and a body length of 6,171mm, from which the model name is derived. The engine for the standard versions is a 5.5-liter V8 producing 550ps, while the "S" models, both 57 and 62, are equipped with a 6-liter V8, also twin-turbocharged, now generating a maximum output of 630ps.

The "S" models not only see an increase in power but also a redesign of the exterior. The front end, in particular, has been refined. The front grille now has a more upright design and is larger and more three-dimensional. The 57 and 62 feature a design with 20 vertical ribs, while the 57S and 62S employ 12 thick double ribs. The shape of the door mirrors has also been revised for optimized aerodynamics.

Chassis and Interior: The Epitome of Luxury



The 57 and 62 are fitted with 19-inch wheels painted in titanium silver. The 57S and 62S come with 20-inch wheels in sterling silver. The tires are specially developed in collaboration with Michelin; during development, Michelin produced 27 different samples before meticulously tuning them with considerations for quietness and other factors.

Inside, three new colors are available for the exquisite Nappa leather used for upholstery and other surfaces. Furthermore, the long-wheelbase versions, the 62 and 62S, offer an optional electrochromic panoramic glass sunroof. This glass roof, covering the rear passenger area like a glass dome, incorporates an LCD film that allows control of transparency between clear and opaque states, enhancing comfort.

The Landauer Features a Soft Top Only for Rear Seats



Additionally, the new "Landauer" model is a significant highlight this time. Based on the 62S, its most distinctive feature is the retractable soft top exclusively for the rear seats. Named "Landauer" after a similar carriage design from the 1920s and 30s, it is a rare design in modern times. The soft top is a multi-layered structure with excellent weather resistance. Moreover, when passengers in the rear enjoy open-air driving and exceed 70 km/h, a wind deflector automatically deploys to prevent wind turbulence inside the cabin. It is a unique model that combines classic elegance with modern technology.
