Refreshed Visual Impression with Exterior Design Changes

The minor change to Lexus' flagship LS series focused on three key areas: 1) subtle revisions to the exterior design, 2) the addition of new exterior colors, and 3) the optional availability of "L-Select," which allows for interior customization. Simultaneously, the LS460 version SZ was newly established, featuring a specially tuned transmission, suspension, high-performance brakes, and larger wheels, which Lexus describes as "pursuing the joy of driving." This is also noteworthy.

The exterior design saw modifications to the front grille, headlamps, and bumper, as well as the rear combination lamps and bumper. This has refreshed the visual impression. The design of the 18-inch aluminum wheels was also changed, and door mirrors with integrated turn signals were adopted. The exterior color palette was expanded to a total of 10 colors for the LS460 and LS460L, including the newly developed "Lapis Lazuli Mica" and four other new shades. The LS600h and LS600hL now offer 11 colors with the addition of five new shades.

In terms of driving safety, active headrests, which contribute to reducing whiplash injuries, and automatic high beams are now standard on all models. The latter automatically switches between high and low beams based on conditions such as oncoming and preceding vehicles, as well as ambient light.

19-inch Forged Aluminum Wheels and Brembo Brakes

Inside, a wider variety of materials and colors are available for the seats, door trim, roof, and genuine wood panels. Furthermore, the color of the stitching on the seats and instrument panel can now be selected, leading to over 30,000 possible interior combinations. This is part of the "L-Select" interior customization program, offered as an option on select models.

The "LS460 version SZ" is a particularly noteworthy sporty specification. It features a specially designed grille with a blacked-out mesh interior set against a chrome frame, along with revised front and rear under spoilers and side rocker moldings. Additionally, newly designed sports seats offering superior hold have been adopted.

The "LS460 version SZ" is powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine producing a maximum output of 385 horsepower. This is paired with a specially tuned eight-speed automatic transmission. The sporty shifting feel is enhanced by paddle shifters that allow manual gear changes without removing hands from the steering wheel, and by a rev-matching system that adjusts engine speed for optimal downshifts.

The suspension has also been made sportier than before, featuring newly developed variable damping force shock absorbers. The air springs and stabilizers have been tuned to match the vehicle's character. Furthermore, it is equipped with 19-inch forged aluminum wheels and Brembo brakes.

Surprisingly Nimble

Driving it, the LS460's inherent excellence as an enjoyable car to drive is evident. There's no unnatural, forced tuning feel; instead, you experience smooth acceleration and straightforward handling. The suspension, having been revised, feels slightly firmer, but body roll during cornering is suppressed, enhancing its sports car-like character. It would appeal to those who prefer a firmer suspension even in a large sedan.

The LS460's V8 boasts a formidable torque of 51.0 kgm, making the car surprisingly nimble despite its weight of around 2 tons. Combined with steering that responds precisely to even slight inputs, the 5060mm long body of the standard wheelbase version moves exactly as intended, providing a satisfying driving experience. It's not overly sensitive, but it is agile – this is the LS460's charm, and the LS460 version SZ amplifies this sporty sensation.

The interior design has also changed, with a black base color accented by saddle tan, a shade of brown, in the "LS460 version SZ." Particularly on the door panels, bold curves in this saddle tan leather create a more vibrant impression. The seats offer good support, and it's pleasing to see how clearly the developers' intent was realized in this vehicle.

BRAND HISTORY
Toyota launched its luxury car brand LEXUS in the American market in 1989. The aim was to offer a new value proposition distinct from American and German luxury cars, leveraging Toyota's advanced technology, superior quality, and exceptional customer service.

In September of the same year, the "LS400" (domestic name: Celsior) and "ES250" (domestic name: Camry) were introduced to the American market. By February of the following year, 1990, the LS400 had already won Best Import Car. Lexus' reputation continued to grow, and with an expanding lineup, it solidified its position as a luxury car brand.

Following its success in America, Lexus expanded into Europe in 2004 and announced its business development in Japan in May of that year. In August 2005, it launched its luxury car business in its home country. Initially, the lineup lacked a flagship model, featuring the "GS" (successor to Toyota's Aristo), "SC" (domestic name: Soarer), and "IS" (successor to Toyota's Altezza). However, the long-awaited new LS was introduced in September 2006, followed by its hybrid version, the "LS600h/LS600hL," in May 2007, meeting the expectations of luxury sedan buyers.

Meanwhile, Lexus has been focusing on building a sporty image, announcing the sports model "IS F" in October 2007 and entering the developing "LF-A" sports coupe in the Nürburgring 24 Hours race in May 2008. Further growth in popularity is anticipated.
