Audi Q5 | "So Light!" (Part 2)

Audi Q5 | The Audi Q5 (Part 2)

Astonishingly Nimble.

Despite being an SUV, the Audi Q5 maintains a height of 1650mm, offering the dynamism of a sedan and versatility for both on-road and off-road use. What is the true value of this car, released by Audi with great anticipation?

A curb weight kept around 1.8 tons

Indeed, upon driving the Q5, I first felt the driving enjoyment that Audi emphasizes. Although its height is low at 1650mm, it is classified as an SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle). One might expect a car developed primarily for off-road driving and high cargo capacity, but the Q5 is different. Settling into the sporty seats with their ample bolstering to hold the body, I pressed the start button, ignited the engine, and as soon as I stepped on the accelerator, I was surprised by its nimbleness.

High-tensile steel, known for its light weight and high strength, is a material not typically used extensively in mainstream vehicles due to cost. However, in the premium Q5, its benefits are leveraged to keep the curb weight around 1.8 tons. Combined with the fact that, for example, the 2.0 TFSI quattro delivers a substantial torque of 35.7kgm from a very low 1500rpm, this likely creates the satisfying sensation of the car gliding forward effortlessly. The responsive steering also undoubtedly contributes significantly to this agile driving feel.

Another aspect of the Q5 that impresses is its ride comfort. There's no harshness; it's flat and smooth. In technical terms, it's referred to as 'sprung and unsprung mass,' and the well-tuned relationship with the vehicle's weight likely contributes to the exceptionally pleasant journey. This sensation was truly remarkable.

Driver's intent and the car's movement are synchronized

Cornering, perhaps surprisingly, is also a strong suit for the Q5. The suspension system, utilizing a significant amount of aluminum, not only contributes to weight reduction but also ensures precise movements. As if to validate the explanation of meticulous tuning that considers front-rear weight balance and vehicle maneuverability, turning the hydraulically power-assisted steering results in superb chassis response. The car's movement perfectly synchronizes with the driver's intentions, placing it among the top tier of SUVs.

Personally, I was particularly fond of the 2.0 TFSI quattro. With its substantial torque of 35.7kgm available from very low revs, the car's response to accelerator input is agile, and the chassis feels even lighter. The turbocharger is also expertly calibrated, ensuring no lack of power in any rev range and enabling a nimble drive.

The interior offers ample space for four adults. The 'MMI Multimedia Interface,' combined with a 10-speaker, 180-watt audio system and a 40GB hard drive, holds significant appeal for music lovers. An optional 505-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system is also available.

This is the arrival of a new Audi, adorned with a fresh allure, where the SUV's aesthetic adds a touch of the extraordinary.
