Audi R8: The long-awaited model equipped with a V10 5.2 FSI engine

AudiJapan isdebuted at the Detroit Show in January this yearhas added the long-awaited V10 5.2 FSI engine model, the "Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro," to its 2-seater mid-ship premium sports car "Audi R8," and has begun accepting reservations through nine "Audi R8 Dealers" nationwide.

The flagship premium sports car in the R8 lineup

The "Audi R8" inherits the genes of a racing car that won Le Mans 24 Hours five times and achieved 62 victories in endurance races worldwide. Now, the "Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro," positioned at the top of the model lineup, has been introduced.

The "Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro" is powered by a high-revving FSI gasoline direct-injection V10 5.2-liter engine with a dry-sump system. Its maximum speed is 8,700 rpm, comparable to a racing engine. This V10 5.2-liter engine produces a maximum output of 386 kW (525 ps) and a maximum torque of 530 Nm / 6,500 rpm. It delivers outstanding performance, with 0-100 km/h acceleration in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 316 km/h.

Exceptional driving performance and usability harmoniously integrated

The design and equipment also differentiate it from the V8 engine model. The styling has become more aggressive with the new chrome-finished front single-frame grille, larger front air intakes to accommodate the increased engine power, and exclusive 10-spoke Y-design 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside, it features standard sports seats upholstered in fine nappa leather and a dedicated instrument cluster, enhancing both luxury and sportiness.

The "Audi R8 5.2 FSI quattro" incorporates Audi's unique technologies, including a mid-ship layout and quattro (full-time 4WD system). This highly anticipated new model achieves a sophisticated fusion of seemingly contradictory elements: exceptional driving performance and everyday usability.

BRAND HISTORY
Audi's emblem is the "Four Rings." As you may know, each ring represents one of the automotive manufacturers: Audi, DKW (Drakenburg), Horch, and Wanderer. All were based in Saxony and were pioneers of the German automotive industry at the beginning of the 20th century. However, facing the Great Depression after World War I, the four companies formed Auto Union in 1932 to survive. DKW specialized in motorcycles and small cars, Wanderer in mid-size cars, Audi in premium mid-size cars, and Horch in luxury cars.

However, after World War II, Saxony in East Germany fell under Soviet occupation, and Auto Union ceased to exist. Anticipating this, the new Auto Union was established in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, in West Germany. Unlike BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Auto Union faced a challenging start without existing factories, but gradually gained strength through the production of vehicles like the DKW delivery van.

In late 1964, Auto Union came under the umbrella of Volkswagen and soon launched new models bearing the Audi name. In 1969, it merged with NSU (known for its development of the Wankel engine), based in Neckarsulm, becoming Audi NSU Auto Union. From 1985 onwards, it has continued as Audi to the present day. Audi's popularity is driven by its technology, including quattro, its dynamic performance backed by motorsport activities, elegant design, and high-quality finish.
