Excessive Performance
The current C-Class debuted in 2007. The interplay of its two distinctive lines, “Elegance” and “Avantgarde,” was a recent talking point.
Furthermore, its sporty driving feel, a departure from previous Mercedes models, has garnered attention. Notably, the C300 Avantgarde S, with its manageable 4630 x 1770 x 1430mm dimensions for its class, is powered by a 3-liter V6 engine producing 231ps/300Nm. It’s a model that stands out for its sporty yet effortless ride.
Even that is more than enough, yet the C63 AMG boasts nearly double the maximum output of the C300 Avantgarde S at 457ps and 600Nm of torque. Is this not excessive, even for AMG? By any measure, it's performance beyond what the C-Class needs.
The interior is appointed with Nappa leather and black bird's-eye maple wood. Semi-bucket sports seats firmly support the body during cornering. The steering wheel is an AMG-exclusive design, a leather-wrapped 3-spoke unit with paddles for manual shifting of the 7-speed automatic transmission.
Pure Exhilaration
With such thoughts in mind, settling into the sports seat, tightening the embrace of the generously bolstered side supports, and facing the flat-bottomed steering wheel, one's spirits are inevitably lifted.
As if to meet those expectations, the proud V8 roared to life, delivering a torrent of acceleration. Perhaps out of consideration for its larger siblings, its maximum output is 68ps lower than the higher-tier SL63 AMG, but its momentum is utterly exhilarating. Moreover, based on the C-Class, which has achieved a new level of handling performance, it has been refined into a machine that even its larger siblings would respect for its agility.
The suspension employs reinforced AMG sports suspension. It features an ESP stability control system, but deactivating it allows for maneuvers such as controlled slides.
The Purest Sporting Essence
In exchange for this sportiness, the ride quality is decidedly firm. While it is a four-door saloon, the comfort that a family would welcome has been somewhat sacrificed.
However, with this car, it’s best not to be greedy trying to cover all bases. It is, after all, a luxurious and extreme toy, costing over 10 million yen, to be enjoyed alone, perhaps with the body sliding through corners.
In this regard, it differs from other “63 AMG” models that, contrary to their appearance, possess a surprisingly comfortable character. Yet, in another sense, the C63 AMG can be seen as the model that most purely expresses AMG's sporting spirit.
The C63 AMG is positioned less as the top-tier C-Class grade and more as an exceptionally sporty model within the “63 AMG class.” It’s a type of car that is difficult to find not only among AMGs but also among other brands.
