Mercedes-BenzCLA-Classis a model that is the production version of theBeijing Motor Showunveiled at theConcept Style Coupe, and is positioned as a compact four-door coupe that is the little brother to theMercedes-Benz CLS. It shares its basic structure with theA-ClassandB-Class
, and is launched into the premium compact market, which continues to grow. Toshifumi Watanabe got an early test of this key player in Mercedes-Benz's growth strategy.

The Core of a Next-Generation Strategy
Fueled by the rise of emerging markets and the growing demand for downsizing in developed countries, the compact car segment continues to expand. The prevailing view is that the premium category, which emphasizes high added value, will grow from its current 6 million units to over 10 million units by 2020.
As you know, brands like BMW, Audi, and Lexus are focusing on this category. Mercedes aims to be the top share holder in this segment. Their ambitious sales strategies for increased unit sales are no less fervent, even if unstated. Considering the flexibility to meet diversifying tastes and evolving powertrains, as well as production efficiency in their global factories, it is no exaggeration to say that a revamped FF platform is the core of their next-generation strategy.
Mercedes has announced that five variations are planned for the time being based on this new platform.—This is the third model following the A-Class and B-Class.
It is a four-door coupe that shares the same overall width, height, and wheelbase as the A-Class, and strongly inherits the image of the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. Its length exceeds 4,600mm, placing it in terms of size almost identically to thecurrent C-Class. This vehicle class implies that with the shift to an FF premium compact strategy, the next-generation C-Class will likely increase in size to set itself apart.

Brief Test Drive of the 4MATIC Model
The advanced safety features of the CLA-Class are basically the same as those of the A-Class.
However, the "Collision Prevention Assist" (CPA), a collision avoidance system using laser radar that is standard on all models, has had its activation speed significantly lowered from 30 km/h to 7 km/h for the CLA-Class, improving its effectiveness. The Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control system using millimeter-wave radar, and the automatic braking system for collision avoidance and mitigation, along with the Blind Spot Assist which displays approaching vehicles in the side mirrors, should be available as options.
The CLA-Class will be available with a choice of three gasoline engines and one diesel engine, for a total of four powertrains.
Details for the Japanese market are still under consideration, but it is likely that the CLA 180 with a 1.6-liter direct-injection turbo producing 122 hp and the CLA 250 with a 2-liter direct-injection turbo producing 211 hp will be introduced, similar to the A-Class and B-Class.
Additionally, there are rumors of a four-wheel-drive "4MATIC" version of the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 being introduced.
This is a completely new mechanism developed by Mercedes for FF powertrains. It integrates a transfer case within the 7G-DCT transmission housing and achieves a compact, lightweight design by using the same oil line for the electronically controlled hydraulic clutch as the transmission oil.
The logic is on-demand, distributing power to the rear wheels as needed. Although the test drive was brief, it took place on winding roads with some gravel. The system responded quickly, and we could confirm its precise distribution that did not compromise steering feel. Of course, theNY Showunveiled at theMercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG, which is based on this drivetrain with dedicated tuning and management, will handle 360 hp. It is highly likely that this model will also be introduced in Japan.

A Typical Mercedes Ride
While the two preceding models, particularly the A-Class, emphasize sporty handling regardless of trim, the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, with its four-door saloon positioning, was designed with "a typical Mercedes ride in mind," according to the chief engineer.
The ride quality, achieved through dedicated tuning of the springs and dampers, as well as modifications such as rubberizing the rear subframe mounts, was indeed supple and distinct from the A-Class. This is likely also due to the characteristics of the run-flat tires; sharp impacts were limited to very low speeds or sharp bumps, and the ride feel, which became smoother with increasing speed, conveyed a level of refinement beyond the C-segment.
Consequently, the responsiveness to steering inputs felt slightly more subdued, but it undoubtedly still offers sufficient performance for sporty driving.
Personally, while I understand the A-Class touting itself as a sports hatch, I believe the B-Class should also adopt this tuning direction.
The ride comfort of the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class has been dramatically refined.
Unprecedented Cd Value
Furthermore, the high level of quietness becomes more apparent at higher speeds. Noise from the underfloor is well suppressed, and there are no noticeable issues with suction around the pillars despite the frameless design. The overall noise level is remarkably low.
It is clear that the outstanding aerodynamics contribute to this quietness. Specifically, the Cd value is 0.23 for almost all grades, and 0.22 for grades with optimized designs for mirrors and wheels.
Mercedes has been making a remarkable effort to reduce air resistance across its model range recently, and the CLA-Class's figures are unprecedented for a mass-produced vehicle with a conventional package, approaching the ultimate.
In the Japanese market, C-segment sedans occupy a somewhat niche position. However, the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class meets expectations with its design, size, and driving quality. Its launch is scheduled for this autumn. It is a model that promises an exciting market response.
