What is AMG in the modern Mercedes-Benz lineup?

AMG, which celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2012, has announced a growth strategy called "AMG Performance 50," aiming for 7% growth in the US, 15% in Germany, and 50% in China. As evidenced by the upcoming "A-Class" model, which will featureA 45 AMGan "A 45 AMG" variant, the lineup of sporty Mercedes-Benz models is expanding. OPENERS is now taking a fresh look at AMG, and with Fumio Ogawa, we tested the "SLK 55 AMG," introduced to Japan in May 2012, to explore what AMG represents within the modern Mercedes-Benz lineup and the world of sporty cars.

Masters of This Kind of Special Model

Compact two-seaters have always held enduring appeal. The "SLK-Class," first introduced by Mercedes-Benz in 1996, is now in its third generation, and through skillful updates, it continues to maintain its position as one of the most attractive cars available.

Topping the SLK range is the "SLK 55 AMG" (¥10.9 million), which was launched in Japan in May 2012. Its defining feature is the 5.5-liter V8 engine, producing a formidable 422 horsepower. This reminds me of a metaphor once used in automotive journalism: "started with a shoehorn" – referring to the practice of fitting a large displacement engine into a small car to create a special model.

Mercedes-Benz has a rich history of creating such special models, beginning with the "300 SEL 6.3" in 1968 and including the highly popular "500E" during the bubble economy era. It's a brand with extensive experience in this field. With a body length of just 4,145mm,Volkswagen Golfcomparable to the "Golf," it houses a large displacement V8 engine, similar to that found in the "S-Class" and the "SL-Class". This rear-wheel-drive sports car, equipped with such a potent engine, is enough to make one's heart race even before getting behind the wheel.

Understated Elegance

The new SLK 55 AMG's standout feature, as highlighted in the press materials, is its "5.5-liter V8 direct-injection engine, which increases maximum output by approximately 17% and maximum torque by approximately 6% compared to the previous model."

However, what's most noteworthy here is the "understated elegance" of the SLK 55 AMG.

While the exterior features a larger front air dam and wider tires, differentiating it from the standard model, these changes are subtle.

Turning to the interior, you might notice elements like the dedicated sports steering wheel.

But these distinctions are only apparent if you already possess some knowledge of the new SLK. To the untrained eye, it simply appears as a stylish two-seater convertible.

The Pinnacle of Joy

The subtlety disappears the moment you start driving.

As you drive, your eyes will dart between the tachometer on the right and the speedometer on the left, both instruments of the same diameter. But the drama begins almost before the needle on the right tachometer has moved. The needle on the left begins to climb rapidly. The car's ability to propel itself like a rocket, thanks to abundant torque from very low RPMs, will astonish the driver.

Furthermore, if you press the accelerator, the V8's unique exhaust note, tuned by AMG to be both sharp and sonorous, will resonate powerfully, and the car will surge forward like a released arrow. If you then use the paddle shifters to engage manual mode, you'll discover another facet of the SLK 55 AMG, one that could bring any sports car enthusiast to the very peak of happiness.

Beyond 3,000 rpm, the engine delivers another surge of potent torque to the rear wheels. As the pistons spin faster, the crankshaft rotates accordingly, and everything, including the driveshaft, sings in a kind of harmony. As you know, tuning in the automotive world refers to enhancing performance, but this sensation, which also evokes the musical term 'tuning,' is where the SLK 55 AMG accelerates with everything perfectly synchronized.

AMG's Distinctive Character

When AMG was first officially imported into Japan, it was known primarily for its straight-line speed – a "straight-line king," so to speak. While there seemed to be various tuning stages available in Germany, the options chosen in Japan often featured stiff suspension settings. This highlighted a less desirable aspect of Mercedes' approach to suspension, which treated the chassis like a single plank suspended by springs at the four corners.

However, contemporary AMG vehicles exhibit a balance akin to art. They retain Mercedes' unique steering feel, characterized by weak self-aligning torque – meaning the steering wheel returns to center with less force than in many other manufacturers' cars after being turned. This is because AMG modifies vehicles from the perspective of being Mercedes' sports division. This approach ensures that even while pursuing sportiness, AMG never crosses paths with BMW or Porsche, maintaining its own distinct identity. I believe this is a positive attribute.

A Glimpse into Mercedes-Benz's Engineering

Even the standard "SLK 350 BlueEfficiency" offers a thoroughly sporty driving experience.

Its compact size, with a relatively light curb weight of 1.4 tons and a wheelbase shorter than that of the Volkswagen "Golf," is a key characteristic of this car.

By offering a large displacement engine in this platform, Mercedes emphasizes its unique brand identity, born from its extensive experience with large vehicles and powerful engines.

While the 306ps SLK 350 is already enjoyable, the SLK 55 AMG successfully combines even greater torque – an astonishing, ever-increasing supply of power – and sharper acceleration with a suspension that provides a comfortable ride and a highly responsive steering system.

The SLK encapsulates all the engineering prowess that modern Mercedes-Benz is renowned for.
