A Bargain at 15 Million Yen
The C63 AMG Coupe "Black Series," exhibited at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show last December, drew considerable attention at the Mercedes-Benz booth. It is the fourth Black Series model, following the previous SLK55, CLK63, and SL65. While it can be considered the successor to the CLK63 Black Series, its performance has improved and its price has decreased.
Mercedes-AMG announced that production would continue through 2012 without a unit limit. However, the allocation for the Japanese market was a mere 50 units. Even before its display at the Tokyo Motor Show, it was reportedly "sold out." This suggests that AMG fans quickly recognized the exceptional value offered by its performance and price, deeming it a "must-buy." Indeed, with performance exceeding the CLK63 Black Series at a price of 15 million yen, it can be considered a bargain. Still, perhaps the importer's assessment was too optimistic. Did they underestimate the passion and spirit of Japanese AMG enthusiasts?!
Wide Fenders Like a Touring Car Racer
Let's briefly outline the differences from the base C63 AMG Coupe. First, the styling. The most striking feature of the Black Series' styling has always been its widened fenders. This time, the front track has been widened by 40mm and the rear by 79mm, resulting in fenders that are 28mm wider on each side at the front and 42mm wider at the rear compared to the normal model.
Combined with the wide fenders reminiscent of a touring car racer, the aerodynamic parts, which inherit design elements from the SLS AMG GT3 machine, create a truly competitive and attractive appearance.

Aerodynamic Devices Enhancing the Styling
From the bumper spoiler with its large opening to supply fresh air to the oversized oil cooler, to the two carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) canards, aluminum hood, side skirts, CFRP high rear wing, and CFRP rear diffuser, the car's attire is perfectly suited for a circuit pit or paddock. All aerodynamic devices feature a unique design distinct from the normal model (some optional parts are available).
The combination of massive forged alloy wheels and tires, also in an SLS-inspired design, and a powerful braking system with composite discs (front) adds both flair and substance to the car's racing aesthetic.
A dedicated AMG emblem badge for the Black Series now adorns the trunk lid and dashboard, a subtle joy for the owner.
AMG's Masterpiece: The M156 6.2-Liter Naturally Aspirated V8 Engine
Aside from the standard two-seater configuration with Recaro bucket sport seats, and the sporty ambiance created by the red stitching and seatbelts against the dark interior, the overall appearance is largely the same as the normal C63 AMG. Of course, a four-seater configuration is possible upon request (in which case, sports seats rather than bucket seats are used). However, for those who prioritize the special nature of the Black Series, whether for track use or as a collector's item, the spartan and exclusive two-seater is recommended. When this car becomes a collector's item in the future, such exclusivity will be valued more than practical functionality. Practicality is unnecessary for a collectible.
Beyond its appearance, the engine specifications are particularly noteworthy. The M156, AMG's masterpiece 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, has been boosted to a likely final specification of 380 kW / 517 hp. This is the most powerful specification in C-Class history. It is paired with the 7-speed AMG Speedshift MCT, as in the base model. A large-displacement naturally aspirated engine combined with a single-clutch transmission for sporty shifts... This powertrain is also slated for discontinuation in the near future. In this regard, the historical value of the C63 Black Series is significant.

The Stage: Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
The suspension also incorporates dedicated designs to match the wider track and enhanced specifications. Notably, the newly designed adjustable coilover suspension is a highlight for driving enthusiasts. The 3-stage ESP and rear LSD are also standard.
The international press drive was held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, famous for its "corkscrew" corner. In recent years, special AMG test drives, such as those for the SL65 Black Series and SLS Gullwing, have often taken place here, coinciding with the annual AMG Performance Day for customers held in the autumn.
Wearing a helmet and squeezing into the snug bucket seat, with a racing driver at the helm of an SLS as the pace car, I set off in the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series.
A Ride Like a Touring Car Championship
To put it simply, the ride quality is almost like that of a touring car championship contender. It feels like a taller SLS, and the difference from the base C63 AMG is stark. As soon as I exited the pit lane and approached the first corner from the main straight, I was already exclaiming, "15 million yen is cheap for this!"
The M156 engine exhibits a noticeably rougher idle than the normal C63, transmitting powerful vibrations to the driver. Combined with the racy and spartan interior, the driver's excitement can be even more heightened than when seated in an SLS.
Perhaps due to the wider tires, there's a strong initial push, followed by explosive acceleration. Driving the straights at full throttle, the improved aerodynamics provide remarkable stability, and the lightness of the rear end, present in the normal C63 Coupe, is nowhere to be felt.

Sound on Par with the SLS AMG
The V8 sound is even more robust than the normal model, with a quality and volume almost on par with the SLS. Watching them drive by in formation, you could mistake the sound for an SLS. It's like an American muscle car. However, Japanese people might prefer the dry, high-pitched sound of a Ferrari over this deep rumble...
Entering tight corners, the front and rear suspension work in unison, maintaining a flat ride and keeping the car firmly planted on the road. The initial stability is recaptured in the corners.
As the sound of the downshift echoes dramatically, the front wheels respond with remarkable speed, turning the nose precisely into the corner. Unlike the normal C63 Coupe, where the rear end easily slides with throttle adjustments, it now grips tenaciously, thanks to the wide rear tires. It would take considerable skill and courage to break traction.
For the Circuit-Acclimated Expert
On the track, the Black Series is in its element. While perhaps less thrilling than the normal C63, its lap times are undoubtedly much faster.
In conclusion, the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series is an exquisite rear-wheel-drive sports car that is best enjoyed by (or perhaps only accessible to) those already accustomed to the circuit. It serves as an excellent step-up model for those who enjoy the normal C63 series on the track (a popular trend in America!). However, acquiring one new now may prove difficult...
We hope for an increase in production numbers or a second iteration.
