A Bold Exterior and Jet-Fighter Inspired Interior
The "Concept A-Class" presented at this year's Shanghai Auto Show builds upon the "F800 Style" revealed at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, featuring a dynamic exterior design. Similar to the four-door coupe "CLS," which was released in Japan in February, it boasts a dropping line that flows from the front fender to the rear, lending it a more muscular and sporty appearance than previous A-Class models. Compared to its predecessors, the bonnet is longer, the side windows are smaller, and the vehicle's height is lower.
Another striking exterior feature is the distinctive radiator grille. With the large three-pointed star prominently placed in the center, surrounded by a pattern of fine dots, this design is echoed in the wheels and headlamps. The full LED headlamps, designed to evoke stars scattered across the night sky, create a unique visual effect.
The powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, force-fed by a turbocharger. It produces a maximum output of 155 kW (210 hp). This engine has undergone further refinements to improve fuel efficiency. A dual-clutch transmission is employed.
The interior is equally distinctive and sporty, with a design inspired by a jet fighter's cockpit. From the air vents on the dashboard and the center console reminiscent of a flight panel, to the semi-transparent dashboard styled after jet wings, the overall impression is one of unique flair.
Other features include driver assistance systems such as an adaptive braking system utilizing radar, and the "COMMAND-online" infotainment system showcased at the recent Geneva Motor Show. This COMMAND-online system enables information sharing with smartphones, providing a wide range of connectivity for navigation, traffic information via voice communication, and entertainment such as music and video.
Combining advanced features with a sporty character in every aspect, the Concept A-Class is poised to usher in a new era for Mercedes-Benz's compact segment.
