The First 4WD Model
The "MINI Crossover" is the Japanese specification of a model previously released in Europe as the "Countryman." Following the MINI, MINI Convertible, and MINI Clubman, this is the fourth model in the MINI family and the first to feature four doors. Notably, it also introduces the brand's first all-wheel-drive model to the lineup.
The all-wheel-drive model, the MINI Crossover Cooper S ALL4, is equipped with the "MINI ALL4" full-time four-wheel-drive system. This system utilizes an electronically controlled hydraulic differential directly attached to the final drive to continuously adjust the power distribution between the front and rear axles. Depending on driving conditions, it can distribute power from a 100% front, 0% rear split to a 0% front, 100% rear split.
The engines are designed to enhance driving performance while reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, reflecting a minimalist concept. BMW Group's familiar Valvetronic technology is standard on all models. The Cooper S ALL4 and Cooper S feature a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection technology. Additionally, some models are equipped with brake energy regeneration and an engine start-stop function, demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental consciousness. Consequently, five out of the eight MINI Crossover models qualify for eco-car tax reductions.
The exterior design is distinguished by larger windows than before and the addition of four doors. The roof features a unique design that contributes to the spacious interior. True to its "Crossover" name, it also boasts a wide frame encircling the lower body and prominently flared wheel arches.
Largest Interior Space in the MINI Lineup
Inside, four individual seats are standard, with an optional three-person bench seat for the rear. Leveraging the largest interior space within the MINI range, ample legroom and headroom ensure comfort even on long drives. The rear seats can be individually adjusted for fore-aft position and backrest angle. Folding the backrests completely expands the luggage compartment capacity from the standard 350 liters to 1,170 liters. Instead of a traditional center console, the "MINI Center Rail" system is employed, allowing for the attachment and movement of cup holders and other accessories, offering versatile storage solutions.
For safety, all models come standard with six airbags and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC). The vehicle achieved a 5-star rating in Euro NCAP crash tests. A key modification for the Japanese market is the vehicle's height. While the European specification has a total height of 1,561mm, the Japanese version has been lowered by 11mm to 1,550mm to accommodate restrictions in mechanical parking garages. This was achieved through a specially developed antenna mount on the roof.
The MINI Crossover is available in eight variations: One, Cooper, Cooper S, and Cooper S ALL4, each offered with both manual and automatic transmissions. Prices range from ¥2.65 million for the most affordable One 6-speed manual model to ¥3.79 million for the top-tier Cooper S ALL4 6-speed automatic model.
