The Joy of the Nimble Second-Generation Cayenne (1)

The Porsche Cayenne was redesigned in 2010. The base model features a nimble V6 engine.

V6 Engine: Improved Fuel Economy and Output

The Porsche Cayenne is an SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle). The redesigned second generation is more refined and offers improved handling. Notably, the V6-equipped model is touted for its fuel efficiency.

The V6 model is called the "Cayenne," and is available in two variants: one with a 6-speed manual transmission (¥7.48 million) and one with an 8-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission (¥7.95 million).

The Cayenne's V6 has a total displacement of 3598cc. The basic engine is carried over from the previous generation, featuring a narrow-angle V-shape with a 15-degree bank angle. New additions include direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, and a variable resonance intake system, resulting in a 10 ps increase in maximum output and a 15 Nm increase in maximum torque compared to the previous model.

The higher-grade Cayenne S is equipped with a V8 engine, shared with the Panamera. This V8 features an aluminum block and dry-sump lubrication. In contrast, the Cayenne's V6 uses a cast-iron block and a wet-sump system.

Porsche claims that by refining the engine components and reducing the vehicle's weight, CO2 emissions and fuel consumption have been reduced by up to 20 percent. The AT model is equipped with an engine auto start/stop system for idling, which also contributes to fuel efficiency.

A Refined Face, Similar to the Panamera

The full-time 4WD system is combined with an electronically controlled center differential with a locking mechanism, an Automatic Brake Differential (ABD), and an Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR). These are standard features shared with the V8 model.

For the V6, a self-leveling function integrated into the suspension system and the Porsche Active Suspension Management system are available as options.

My impression of the V6 Cayenne test drive was better than expected. The front fascia has undergone a significant design change, giving it a family resemblance to the Panamera. True to Porsche's goal of achieving high levels of performance both on-road and off-road, this model demonstrates a high standard of capability in both domains.

Automatic Transmission and Handling That Impart Agility to a Heavy Body

Although this was an on-road test drive, the V6's agility was particularly impressive. While the Cayenne has always been known for its high-speed performance and off-road capability, this time it fully delivered on another value: the joy of driving it anywhere.

The V6 engine revs freely, and its torque delivery is exquisite. The combination with the accelerator pedal's feedback is well-tuned, providing power precisely as the driver expects based on pedal input. It's responsive, powerful, and makes you forget the vehicle's weight of over two tons.

The automatic transmission, which Porsche calls Tiptronic S, is highly commendable. Both the shift schedule and the smoothness of gear changes are seamless, providing a comfortable experience for the occupants. It reaffirms that torque converter automatic transmissions still have much to offer.

Regarding steering feel, while the V6 Panamera felt too light, the Cayenne's steering is just right. The relationship between steering and body roll is well-balanced, making it feel like a sports car as it gracefully navigates winding roads. The compact and lightweight engine likely contributes significantly to the handling. It's a reminder of the fundamental truth that lightness is paramount for a car.

The Cayenne: A Significant Presence in Mobility

What's interesting about the Cayenne is the recent expansion of its lineup. While there's the high-performance Cayenne Turbo with a twin-turbo engine producing 500 hp, a hybrid model combining a 3-liter V6 with an electric motor has also been added, though it is not available in Japan.

For a time, the Cayenne seemed to be perceived as the ultimate luxury car for the wealthy. However, experiencing the enjoyable V6 Cayenne has reminded me that Porsche is not only a sports car manufacturer that delights its drivers but also a valuable presence that encourages us to consider the future of mobility through a rich array of choices.
