Michiko Fujiwara Series: October 2014 | Finding Your Own "Place Where Beauty Resides"

New Book "Where Beauty Resides" Released. I'd be happy if my life's journey could be of help to someone!

To Find Your Own "Where Beauty Resides"

My new book, "Where Beauty Resides" (Gentosha), was released on Thursday, October 23rd! This is a compilation of essays originally serialized in the literary magazine "GINGER L." (Gentosha) from 2010 to 2013, with added revisions. My 2012 book,"Wake Up to a Beautiful Morning to Change Your Life" (Gentosha)was born from this very series. So, what exactly is "Where Beauty Resides" about?.

The Story Behind Writing for "GINGER L."

First, let me explain how I came to write this series. As I mention in the book's afterword, it began when my editor asked me to "write something that offers insights into life for younger people." At first, I hesitated, thinking, "Suggesting insights sounds a bit condescending, and I'm hardly enlightened enough to do that..." But then I thought, perhaps I could write about my own experiences as a foundation. I considered that sharing how I came to think or act in certain ways based on my experiences and failures might be helpful as a guide to life. With that renewed perspective, I accepted the offer.

However, even with the aim of offering insights, a central theme was needed. After discussing with my editor, we decided to focus on matters related to my profession: "beauty." Why connect "life insights" with "beauty"? Because I've always felt, even vaguely since my early days as a hair and makeup artist, that the two are on the same level. This feeling solidified into a firm conviction after working with countless women's faces. For 35 years, I've witnessed firsthand how even those blessed with exceptional features can lose their allure depending on their life choices, while others grow more captivating with age. I've also seen how a tidy room reflects a clear mind and appearance, just as a messy one can betray a person's inner state.

The Influence of Personality and Appearance on Our Inner Selves

For instance, people who constantly complain or speak ill of others tend to have downturned mouths and, strangely, dry skin. Even if someone meticulously styles their appearance, a messy living space can subtly betray their overall aura. Conversely, those who can find the good in themselves and others, or who maintain a positive outlook, often have sparkling eyes that grow brighter with age. A tidy home often mirrors a clear mind and outlook. Of course, refining one's appearance through makeup, hairstyle, and fashion to suit oneself is also important, as such external presentation strongly influences our inner state. However, it's crucial that the "appearance aligns with the inner self"; otherwise, it won't resonate internally.

In this way, our inner selves manifest outwardly, for better or worse, and our appearance and inner world constantly interact. This book compiles 13 such aspects, where beauty resides, into "Where Beauty Resides." The titles include:

"Beauty Resides in Lively Eyes"
"Beauty Resides in Sincerity"
"Beauty Resides in the Morning"
"Beauty Resides in Color"
"Beauty Resides in Choice"
"Beauty Resides in Authentic Individuality"
"Beauty Resides in a Satisfying Diet"
"Beauty Resides in One's Living Space"
"Beauty Resides in Forgiveness"
"Beauty Resides in the Worldly Adult"
"Beauty Resides in a Marriage True to Oneself"
"Beauty Resides in Human Relationships"
"Beauty Resides in the Wise Use of Money"

Some titles might immediately suggest their content, while others might make you ponder, "What does that mean?" Each chapter reflects my experiences, from childhood through my twenties, thirties, forties, and up to the present, exploring what I believe contributes to where beauty resides. In essence, this book chronicles nearly half a century of my life, making it, in a way, autobiographical—perhaps a bit of an exaggeration!

Everyone Has Their Own Place Where Beauty Resides

While writing each installment of this series, I found myself reflecting, "Ah, I remember being like that as a child," or "I certainly don't want to go back to those difficult times," reaffirming my path in life. I'm not someone who dwells much on the past, but I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to look back on my life through this series. It allowed me to clearly see the person I am now, having moved beyond who I was then. It also enabled me to face my future self anew. In that sense, this book might have been written more for myself than to offer insights to others!

It's astonishing how quickly half a century of life has passed. That's precisely why I want younger people to avoid the mistakes I made and to navigate their own paths without unnecessary effort. I find myself echoing the advice I received from my elders. And I've come to naturally wish that my own life's journey could be of some help to others. Perhaps this sentiment arises precisely because I've taken the time to reflect on my life.

What is clear to me now is that everyone has their own place where beauty resides, and there are countless such places. I hope this book can help you discover them.
