Michiko Fujiwara | August Essay: “The Power of Food, Felt Anew!”
August 2009 | A Renewed Appreciation for the Power of Food!
So, the place I eagerly headed to with the resolve to "build muscle!" was the training gym 'Total Workout,' headed by Kevin Yamazaki. My assistant had heard that each person is assigned a personal trainer who creates a customized training regimen and program, and I made the decision on the spot.

Transform Your Body in 3 Weeks with 3 Weekly Workouts and Diet
The spacious and bright gym was lined with a variety of bright red training machines. It also had a massage room and a cafe. I learned that I could receive massages before and after training, and that the Total Workout-style meals, advocated by Kevin Yamazaki, could be eaten at the cafe. "Wait, Total Workout-style meals?" My assistant hadn't mentioned that. It turned out that 'Total Workout' was famous not just for its workouts, but also for its dietary approach.
This dietary approach involves undergoing training three times a week for three weeks while strictly adhering to a high-protein, low-fat, low-carbohydrate diet to rapidly transform the body. I see, this suits my impatient nature perfectly. The rules include avoiding carbohydrates and sugars (along with many other forbidden foods), and eating five or more small meals a day, spaced to maintain stable blood sugar levels (which is convenient and suits my constitution).
Following these rules should be manageable. My only concern, naturally, was that I wouldn't be able to drink alcohol. My household has a habit of enjoying a drink with dinner every night. Could I really go without alcohol for three weeks? However, if I'm going to do something, I have to do it thoroughly; that's just my nature. I immediately purchased the book 'Total Workout Style 3-Week Diet Bible' (by Tomo Ikenaga, published by Koken) at the gym and, full of motivation and anticipation, began the diet the very next day.
Weight Loss of 1kg by Day 2, 2kg by Day 5: My Experience
First, I went shopping for OK ingredients. I bought lean chicken breast and tenderloin, lean tuna, squid, octopus, and oil-free canned tuna – foods low in fat and high in protein. The instructions were detailed: even with chicken, thigh meat was out due to its fat content, and while egg whites were fine, yolks were not because of their fat and cholesterol.
I thought vegetables would be fine, but root vegetables like daikon radish, burdock root, carrots, and onions were off-limits due to their high carbohydrate and sugar content. Surprisingly, plant-based proteins like tofu, natto, and soy milk, often considered healthy, were also forbidden due to their fat content. For the same reason, nuts, sesame seeds, avocados, and olive oil were also unsuitable during the three-week diet.
"Hmm, is this okay or not?" My head spun, but once I had the approved ingredients, I just had to follow the recipes. This meant I didn't have to agonize over "What should I make today?" which, in a way, made it easier. After all, it's simpler to choose from a limited selection than a wide array.
The effects began to show almost immediately. My weight dropped by 1kg by the second day and 2kg by the fifth day, even though I was eating five meals a day. The most striking change, however, was in my skin. My previously thin skin seemed to gain substance, becoming firm, radiant, and healthy-looking. This wasn't just my imagination. An acquaintance who saw me a week later was visibly astonished, and even my assistant, who sees me every day, was surprised by the transformation in my complexion.
To think that food could bring about such a rapid change—I've always agreed with the saying, "We are what we consume." I'd tried various diets before, but I'd never felt such a clear difference and impact.
Giving Up After 10 Days... But the New York Race is Fast Approaching!
However, despite experiencing such remarkable results, I gave up after just 10 days! At a friend's home party, faced with expensive champagne and steak, my resolve for beautiful skin vanished. Once I took a bite, my desires were unstoppable. "Ah, how weak-willed I am!" I lamented, but my resilience kicked in. "Well, I've learned that I can achieve beautiful skin by following this diet for the three days leading up to an important event, so maybe it's okay!" I found myself rationalizing. From past experience, I know that the first three days, then ten days, and then three weeks are the critical phases for changing habits. But how difficult it is to overcome those hurdles and persevere. This diet truly made me realize both its effectiveness and the challenge of sticking with it.
My gym sessions, however, continue. After building the basic muscles needed for running through weight training for a month and a half, I'm now undergoing speed training on a treadmill called the 'Super Treadmill.' Apparently, this type of training allows the muscles I've developed to move more efficiently, enabling me to run faster and stronger. Receiving this kind of training makes me feel like a seasoned athlete, boosting my spirits, and the visible progress I make keeps it enjoyable. I think I can stick with this.
To continue, I believe two things are essential: experiencing progress and feeling a sense of accomplishment, and finding it enjoyable. Jogging shares the sense of accomplishment. However, I haven't yet reached the point where I can truly enjoy it. ...But come to think of it, the 10k marathon I participated in back in June gave me a sense of accomplishment, and I actually had fun running it! I remember smiling the entire time. I wonder if I'll be able to enjoy the upcoming race in New York...?
The real challenge, for me, is drawing near.

'Compex performance'
This is a professional-grade device for strengthening muscles, also used by athletes. I primarily use it to train my abs, which are my biggest weak point, and its cool-down function helps relieve swelling and soreness in my legs after exercise. Thanks to it, the fat on my stomach has really tightened up!
