Series: Michiko Fujiwara, July 2014 | Achieve Dewy, Hydrated Skin with the Power of Water

Drink two liters a day, and my skin became visibly more hydrated!

Hydrated Skin Through the Power of Water

For the past month or so, I've been consciously practicing something new, much like I do during meditation (My January 2014 Seriesintroduced in my January 2014 series). It’s drinking about two liters of water a day. This might be normal for some people, but for me, it’s an unprecedented amount of water. The reason I decided to start drinking this much was that during a skeletal alignment session, it was revealed that my water intake was severely insufficient. The practitioner advised me to aim for two liters a day, and after about two weeks of drinking that much, my skin became visibly more hydrated. So, I decided, 'This is going to be my new habit!'

I Naturally Began to Crave Water!

I’ve always been someone who couldn’t drink much water, or rather, I never developed the habit. My reason was rather selfish: I didn’t want to feel full from water, which would then prevent me from eating my meals (especially the savory dishes). Even so, I never consciously thought of myself as someone who didn’t drink much water. It wasn’t until a decade ago, during a location shoot overseas, when an editor I was with pointed out, 'Ms. Fujiwara, you really don’t drink much water,' that I finally became aware of it.

Of course, I knew that drinking water was good for health and beauty, and I’d seen foreign models carrying two-liter bottles of mineral water and constantly sipping from them. But in my younger days, I prioritized food and alcohol (!), and I still thought it was a waste to fill up on water. For the past few years, perhaps due to my age, I’d naturally started to crave water, so I assumed I was drinking enough. However, a specific device revealed through precise measurements that my actual water intake was still quite low.

Dissolving Vegetable Supplements in Hydrogen Water Upon Waking

Are you familiar with a device called a "body composition analyzer"? It’s a type of scale, but it can also measure various internal body metrics like biological age, body fat percentage, subcutaneous fat percentage, visceral fat level, muscle level, bone level, and basal metabolism with high precision. At the skeletal alignment clinic, they use a professional-grade analyzer to collect data from their clients, which is how my low body water content was discovered. With such precise equipment, there’s no fooling it, even if you say, 'Oh, I drink plenty!' verbally.

But this isn't an excuse: the amount of water I drink in the morning is fine (I state this emphatically!). My body naturally craves it in the morning, so I’ve always made sure to drink a certain amount. Furthermore, for the past month and a half, I’ve been drinking about two cups of hydrogen water upon waking. Hydrogen water is currently highly anticipated in the medical field for its potential to improve various illnesses, and data suggests it boosts metabolism for beauty purposes. The one I enjoy is "Suisousui 7.0" ppm (Ecomo International). It’s a type where you make your own hydrogen water by adding a powdered hydrogen-generating agent to a special bottle filled with water, and then drinking it after a few minutes. This allows you to drink freshly made, high-concentration hydrogen water, and the difference from regular water is clear. The particles feel finer, and it strangely permeates my body smoothly. However, it has a unique taste, so I’ve recently taken to dissolving my favorite powdered vegetable supplement, "Vege Power Plus," into it.

My Favorites: Deep Sea Water and German Natural Sparkling Water

In addition to this, along with regular mineral water, I drink about 900mL by mid-morning, as I wake up at 5 AM. The issue lies in the time between afternoon and dinner. During the day, I get caught up in my busy schedule and tend to forget to drink water. Until it becomes a habit, constant conscious effort is necessary. For this, methods that quantify goals, like 'aim for two liters,' are effective and motivating. So, as a countermeasure, I decided to carry a 750mL mineral water bottle filled with water and finish it before dinner. This brings my total intake to 1650mL by the time I get home in the afternoon, leaving only 350mL until bedtime. I figure I can manage that in the three hours before sleep.

However, drinking the same water all the time can get boring, so I switch mineral water types. When I'm out, I drink "Kaiyo no Shinsosui Tenkainosui 1000," which is rich in minerals like magnesium, sodium, calcium, and potassium, and has a mellow taste that goes down smoothly. For dinner, I change things up by drinking chilled sparkling water. My favorite is the German natural sparkling water "Gerolsteiner," which has a mild effervescence. It's also rich in minerals and, with its high hardness of 1310mg/L, seems promising for dieting effects. Come to think of it, since I started consciously drinking water, I feel like the excess fat around my stomach has reduced...

I Feel the "Dewy Freshness" by Looking at My Own Skin

If you want to know more about this, I recommend reading "How to Drink and Choose Water Correctly" by Koichiro Fujita (published by Kairyudo). It explains the importance of drinking water for health (and beauty, of course), how to drink it, and what kind of water to choose—the basic principles of proper water consumption. While drinking water is beneficial for health and beauty, gulping it down or drinking large amounts all at once can be dangerous. There have been cases in America where people died from water intoxication after drinking six liters of water at once. Also, those with kidney or gastrointestinal issues may develop kidney stones or worsen their condition by drinking too much hard water. For those like me who didn't used to drink much water, perhaps starting with about 1.2 liters a day, sipping a cup of water slowly over an hour, would be a good approach. Pushing yourself too hard is never recommended; moderation is key. My alignment practitioner has now advised me to aim for 2.5 liters in the summer, but since I've only just managed to drink two liters, I plan to increase it gradually, listening to my body without overdoing it.

Looking at my skin now, I truly realize that the expression "dewy fresh" really does describe a state of being full of water. I regret having overlooked something so important for so long, but at this time of year, drinking water frequently also helps prevent heatstroke, so I’m congratulating myself for starting this new habit at such a good time!
