Christian Siriano × AVEDA: "Glamorous Updo"

The style, a glamorous updo reminiscent of 1960s Parisian chic, was created by Antoinette Beenders of AVEDA for Christian Siriano's Fall/Winter 2010 collection. This second installment introduces the Christian Siriano Fall/Winter 2010 collection, which took place on February 12, 2010.

A Glamorous "Wave-Like" Updo

For the Christian Siriano Fall/Winter 2010 collection during New York Fashion Week, AVEDA's lead hairstylist Antoinette Beenders crafted a chic, Parisian-inspired updo with a glamorous 1960s flair, utilizing the soon-to-be-released "Control Force Hairspray."

Antoinette, what was the inspiration behind this style, and how did you collaborate with the designer on its creation?

Christian and I were inspired by vintage glamour, reminiscent of Veronica Lake and 1960s Paris. The teased, wavy style reflects the romantic silhouettes and movement that characterize this season's collection.

How can we recreate this style ourselves?

With a few adjustments, this can become a perfect hairstyle for a chic and glamorous evening out. After blow-drying, section the hair into 1-inch (approx. 2.5cm) wide curls. Once curled, brush through and spray with "Air Control" for manageable hold. Pull all the hair back tightly, twist, and secure to the head with pins. Finally, tease the bangs and twist them back. Pinning creates volume and a glamorous, retro effect.

A "Green" Collection Achieved

Christian, as the designer, what was your inspiration for this collection, and what message were you aiming to convey?

I was inspired by Parisian women of the 1960s and the idea of transitioning from daywear to evening attire. The shapes and silhouettes are soft, romantic, and relaxed. They pair beautifully with strong, structured jackets and coats, or cocktail dresses.

You made a significant effort to make this season's show "green." How do you feel about achieving this goal?

This season, we incorporated organic cotton into some of the casual everyday wear. Additionally, by holding our shows in New York City, we are reducing CO2 emissions year by year. It feels very rewarding to contribute to the pursuit of ecological sustainability.

Thank you.

AVEDA STYLE: The Parisian Updo <How to Create the Style>

1. Spray "Air Control" all over the hair to provide manageable hold for styling.

2. Section the hair. Starting from the bottom and working towards the crown, create sections about 1 inch (2.5cm) wide and curl with a barrel curling iron. As each curl forms, wrap it around your finger and pin it to your head to set the curl. Once the hair has cooled, remove the pins and gently brush through the entire head without applying too much tension.

3. Separate and pin the front section of hair from the hairline to the crown. Gather the remaining hair, brush it back, spray with "Air Control" to create volume, and brush thoroughly.

4. Gather the left half of the hair, pull it back firmly, and pin it vertically from bottom to top along the center line of the back of the head. Smooth the ends with your fingers to prevent them from flipping up and spray with "Air Control" to avoid flyaways.

5. Gather the right half of the hair, pull it back firmly, and wrap it around your fingers with the ends tucked inside. Secure it to the head with pins and finish with a strong hold using "Control Force Hairspray."

6. Remove the pins from the bangs, tease them to create volume, and spray with "Air Control." Comb the bangs back so they don't fall onto the forehead, then pin them to the top of the head, creating a wavy volume above the twisted hair from step 4. Finish with "Control Force Hairspray."

Next time,"ORGANIC by John Patrick Fall/Winter 2010 Collection"will be introduced.
