A New Cream with Unimaginable Hydration
Did you know that even when you're relaxing at home, over 200 genes within your skin are fighting damage?
For over 30 years, Estée Lauder has been researching DNA and has focused on "Nrf2 (Nerf-Two)," the key that signals and activates genes that tend to become dormant with age. Estée Lauder has long been engaged in cutting-edge research on Nrf2, one of the most important proteins present within the skin. We now present our findings on this powerful key that unlocks the skin's innate potential for youth.
Nrf2, the "master regulator of beauty," is a protein that can simultaneously activate numerous anti-aging pathways and enhance the skin's defense against external stressors. As we age, the skin's natural Nrf2 activity declines, weakening its resistance to damage and leading to the appearance of visible signs of aging. By boosting Nrf2 activity, we can activate over 200 genes that hold the key to youth, including those involved in anti-inflammation and antioxidant defense, thereby reawakening the skin's diminished anti-aging capabilities.
In collaboration with Dr. Ilya Raskin, a world-renowned plant biologist at Rutgers University, we began research focusing on specific plant extracts exceptionally rich in Nrf2-activating compounds. To combat signs of aging such as fine lines caused by dryness, dullness from uneven texture, and loss of firmness, we have developed the new "Supreme+ Total Cream" by incorporating an extract derived from the "tree of life," Moringa.
The "Supreme+ Total Cream" is a total anti-aging cream that unlocks the skin's innate potential for youth, bringing vitality, firmness, radiance, and glow. Its melting, lightweight texture belies an unimaginable level of hydration. If you are concerned about skin aging, experiencing loss of firmness, or desire continuous moisture and a healthy skin glow, we invite you to experience the power of the "Supreme+ Total Cream." Its light and comfortable, lotion-like texture makes it ideal even for those who typically dislike creams for fear of heaviness.
<Q&A>
—Could you tell us about Moringa? Why is this plant being studied in the labs at Rutgers University?
Dr. Ilya Raskin, Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University, President of GIBEXMy lab has been researching the benefits of Moringa for a long time, and we are currently receiving three grants from the U.S. government for this research. Moringa is an exceptionally valuable plant, rich in essential nutrients, ions, amino acids, and omega-3 fatty acids vital for the human body. If food were to become scarce, a single Moringa tree could provide all the nutrients necessary for human survival.

—Do all varieties of Moringa have the same properties?
Dr. RaskinMoringa is a very special plant, but not all varieties are the same, and the components they contain differ depending on the part of the tree. The extract used by Estée Lauder is derived from the seeds of a nutrient-rich variety called Moringa oleifera. This variety contains more calcium than milk, more vitamin A than carrots, and more vitamin C than oranges. It also contains essential nutrients like potassium and protein, and its seeds are particularly rich in isothiocyanates. Isothiocyanates are phytochemicals with potent anti-aging properties and anti-inflammatory effects on the skin.
—Please explain what is special about the Moringa extract developed for this product.
Dr. RaskinAlthough it is currently patent pending, the Moringa extract is produced through a special process that preserves its abundant nutrients, lipids, and proteins, ensuring that the extract's benefits are effectively delivered to the skin.
—Where is the Moringa oleifera used for extracting the essence cultivated?
Dr. RaskinWe currently have direct contracts with Moringa farms in Jamaica and India.
—What kind of effects does the Moringa extract in the Supreme+ Total Cream have on the skin?
Dr. Nadine Pernodet, Vice President, Skin Biology & Bioactive, Research & Development, Estée LauderThe unique Moringa extract in the Supreme+ Total Cream supports the skin's innate strength. This product also features a complex blend called Collagen Complex. In vitro tests have confirmed that the Moringa extract enhances the action of this Collagen Complex, further promoting the skin's natural collagen production. Additionally, the Moringa extract contains essential nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, and amino acids that help repair the skin's barrier function.
—Do you plan to develop new plant extracts for skincare products in the future?
Dr. RaskinWe are currently proceeding with further joint projects with Estée Lauder. Plants that cannot escape harsh environmental conditions create their own protective and restorative compounds to adapt. We believe these compounds can ultimately be utilized in skincare.
Dr. PernodetWe are conducting further research on the effects of Moringa extract on the skin and fundamental research on key mechanisms related to all skin cells. In conjunction with Estée Lauder's epigenetics research, we will continue to drive the development of innovative skincare products.
—Could you tell us why you decided to collaborate with Rutgers University?
Dr. PernodetWe partnered with Rutgers University to develop new plant extracts for Estée Lauder's new products in collaboration with the renowned Dr. Ilya Raskin. Dr. Raskin, a Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University and President of GIBEX, is globally recognized for his extensive research in plant biology, phytochemistry, and pharmacology, discovering the ability of plants to create nutrients and their efficacy, and developing highly potent plant extracts. He has been described as a "century innovator in botany" by U.S. News & World Report. It was a natural fit for Estée Lauder to pursue research on special plant extracts effective for the skin with Rutgers University, led by him.
—What inspired the development of the Supreme+ Total Cream formula?
Dr. PernodetTo deliver the latest innovations to consumers, Estée Lauder has consistently built upon scientific discoveries. Through our long-term research into Nrf2 and its importance for the skin, we sought to discover new ingredients that could more powerfully support the skin's natural Nrf2 activity. The discovery of these ingredients gave us the confidence that we could develop a superior "Supreme" product.
—What are the characteristics of this cream?
Dr. PernodetThe Supreme+ Total Cream is a total anti-aging cream that addresses various signs of aging. It improves fine lines, dullness from uneven texture, and loss of firmness and elasticity, while providing all-day hydration.
—Who is the target audience?
Dr. PernodetThe Supreme+ Total Cream was developed to meet the needs of women who, while not having specific skin concerns, desire a single product that can address multiple signs of aging.
—Could you tell us more about the isothiocyanates in the special plant extract?
Dr. RaskinIsothiocyanates are molecules widely found in nature. Due to their excellent bioactivity, they are attracting significant interest in the fields of food, chemistry, and pharmaceuticals. Isothiocyanates are primarily found in cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, but extracting stable extracts rich in isothiocyanates from them has historically been very difficult. However, through our research, we have found that we can extract isothiocyanates from specific plants, and that their efficacy and stability are superior to those found in broccoli. This special plant extract not only contains a high concentration of stable isothiocyanates but also significantly enhances their bioactivity. We have developed an unparalleled extract that supports the skin's natural ability to activate Nrf2.
—Why are plant-derived ingredients utilized in skincare products?
Dr. PernodetPlants offer a wide range of benefits, making them a logical choice for developing ingredients that protect the skin. Isothiocyanates found in certain plants promote natural defense mechanisms against external stressors, leading to youthful and healthy skin. They possess the ability to support the skin's natural "rejuvenation," or regeneration process. The special extract rich in isothiocyanates is a uniquely effective skincare ingredient.
—Why is Nrf2 important for the skin?
Dr. PernodetThis protein plays a crucial regulatory role in the aging process, normalizing multiple anti-aging pathways that become active when cells are exposed to stress. This mechanism supports the skin's innate ability to protect itself from inflammation and oxidative damage, thereby extending cell survival. However, as we age, Nrf2 activity gradually declines, weakening the cells' resistance to stress and subsequent damage. This leads to the accumulation of damage in the skin, resulting in visible signs of skin aging.
—How did you discover that certain plants activate Nrf2?
Dr. PernodetWhen we initially began our research with the team at Rutgers University led by Dr. Raskin, we didn't know which plants to investigate to find potent Nrf2 activators. As we researched and investigated various plants together, we focused on specific plants that were abundant in isothiocyanates, one of the most powerful Nrf2 activators.
—Regarding Nrf2 activation, what are the measurable effects of the special plant extract?
Dr. PernodetIn vitro tests showed that the special plant extract, rich in isothiocyanates, increased Nrf2 activity by 76% after 24 hours, activating anti-inflammatory and antioxidant pathways. It soothes skin exposed to UV rays and external irritants. By reducing skin inflammation, we can minimize damage from external stressors, thereby slowing the aging process.
