Paris-Byzance Métiers d’Art Show Make-up by Peter Philips
Peter Philips Interview
On December 7, 2010, the Métiers d’Art collection "Paris-Byzance," a pinnacle of couture craftsmanship, was held at the Cambon boutique in Paris. Here, we present the makeup created by Peter Philips, Global Creative Director of Chanel Makeup, along with backstage scenes.

Red eyeshadow and liner along the arch of Empress Theodora's brows
For this Métiers d’Art collection "Paris-Byzance," the eye makeup was inspired by a mosaic of Empress Theodora of the Byzantine Empire at the Basilica di San Vitale in Italy. The lips are kept nude to emphasize modernity.
Light and rich textures, red and black. The splendor of Byzantine culture, deeply connected to Chanel, is expressed through exquisite techniques.
—What was the inspiration for the looks in this show?
The collection's theme, "Paris-Byzance," itself is a major source of inspiration. It holds many connections and evokes rich imagery for Chanel.
—What briefing did you receive from Karl Lagerfeld?
Karl provided Sam McKnight (hairstylist) and me with sketches outlining his general ideas for the direction we should take. This set the overall tone. Karl also showed us the famous mosaic of Empress Theodora of the Byzantine Empire at the Basilica di San Vitale in Ravenna (circa 500–548 AD). From this, the inspiration for the makeup naturally emerged. The focus was clear: the red eyeshadow and liner along the arch of Empress Theodora's brows.
—Please tell us more about the makeup and the products used.
To recreate this eye makeup, I drew the liner with Le Crayon Lèvres (Rouge) and layered the new shade of Joues Contraste (Rouge).
For color, I used bright, luminous gold and bronze. For the eyes, I combined Lumière Scintillante de Chanel (Topkapi), Joues Contraste (Aurore) and (Mocha) for the cheeks, with strong black mascara and eyeliner, and a beige eye pencil, Le Crayon Yeux (Clair), to emphasize and enlarge the eyes.
The lips were generously hydrated with Baume Lèvres, left nude to further highlight the modernity of the striking eyes. The red Vernis (Coromandel) used for the pedicure echoes the red on the eyes.
This look is all about light and rich textures. Gold, bronze, black, and red. I hope women will enjoy adjusting the balance of these colors to their own preference.
