An Interview with Joseph Scott Grigsby: How to Achieve Beautiful Skin That Resists Aging and Environmental Damage
Joseph Scott Grigsby, Global Marketing & Creative Vice President of LAB SERIES, visited Japan prior to the launch. We spoke with him about the effects of "Future Repair Serum" and global trends in the men's skincare market.
—What effects can be expected from the "Future Repair Serum" being launched this time?
It is said that 90% of the damage men's skin sustains is environmental, and 10% is due to aging. "Future Repair Serum" repairs skin aging and environmental damage while also equipping it to combat future threats. It addresses existing damage and supports the skin's ability to protect itself from future aggressors like sun and air conditioning. When skin is repaired and strengthened, it regains its natural functions and can better fight aging. This capability diminishes with age, but this serum makes it possible. It's never too late for skin care.
This is an item that allows men of all skin tones, ages, races, and skin types to feel a tightening of the skin and experience a vibrant skin condition. It also helps their future skin appear more youthful.
—What are your thoughts on Asian men, such as Japanese men?
LAB SERIES develops products for the most discerning customers, and those customers are Asian men. Although we are an American brand based in New York, we believe Asian men are the most sophisticated globally and have the highest affinity for cosmetics and skincare. They are particular about texture, possess extensive knowledge, and are highly sensitive. What is accepted in Asia will also be accepted in Europe and America.
—Are there differences in the skin of Asians and Caucasians?
While it's universally true that men's skin is thicker than women's, with larger pores and higher sebum production, there are significant differences in how Asian men, including Japanese men, and Caucasian men age. Caucasians tend to show fine wrinkles first, whereas it's known that discoloration and dark spots appear more prominently in Asians.

—With changing environments, skin concerns have likely diversified. What are the most significant damages modern men are experiencing?
Urbanization is progressing worldwide. The concentration of large populations in cities leads to air pollution and extreme weather, posing significant challenges to our lifestyles and, from a skin perspective, to our health. Many people work relentlessly without time to eat, leading busy lives. Skin regenerates during the night, so even a lack of sleep puts the skin at a disadvantage.
—A serum for men might still be somewhat difficult for the general public to accept, but has men's awareness of skincare changed in recent years?
It's true that men are becoming less resistant to using cosmetics. Historically, men's skincare was a form of utilitarianism, driven by the need to solve problems like razor burn or acne. As times have changed and more women have entered the workforce, they have gained higher social status and become stronger. Women, who have long been expected to be beautiful, are now beginning to expect the same from men.
As you can see from the prevalence of selfies everywhere today, everyone needs to be ready to be photographed at any moment. Not just women, but men too, must always be presentable. We are entering an era where asking "What skincare do you use?" is becoming as common as asking "Do you use skincare?"
—Perhaps it's akin to a sense of fashion?
In both New York and Japan, more men than before are paying attention to fashion. While skin isn't fashion, it's something we "wear" every day, so having good skin is fashionable. Unlike clothes that wear out, skin is with us for life, so it never goes "out of fashion."
That's precisely why we want "Future Repair Serum" to help men maintain youthful skin for as long as possible.

A Savior for Men's Skin, More Delicate Than Women's
Achieve Ageless Skin with "Future Repair Serum"
Since its inception in 1987, LAB SERIES has pioneered the development of comprehensive men's cosmetics. It was an early adopter of anti-aging care for men, revolutionizing the concept of men's skincare.
The latest innovation is the new anti-aging serum, "Future Repair Serum," developed through extensive research by the LAB SERIES Research Center, comprised of leading dermatologists, scientists, and skincare specialists.
The formula, developed to suit men's skin—which is thicker and produces more sebum than women's—supports the skin's battle against aging through four distinct approaches.
The first is "Defend," which leads to healthy skin less susceptible to damage from external factors like dryness and UV rays. The second is "Refine," which smooths and refines skin texture. The third is "Rebuild," which quickly penetrates the stratum corneum even on damaged skin, promoting the skin's future ability to protect itself. Finally, the fourth is "Repair," which restores existing damage.
Men's skin is exposed to excessive external stress, such as frequent shaving and daily direct sun exposure, leading to a faster turnover rate than women's. Furthermore, men's basal metabolism peaks at age 16 and gradually declines thereafter, reportedly dropping sharply after age 40. Therefore, LAB SERIES proposes "Future Repair Serum" as an anti-aging solution to begin just before turning 40, around age 35. It is most effective when added after the toner step (Step 2) of the brand's "3-Step Skincare" routine (cleanser, toner, moisturizer). Let the serum, which makes a difference with just 2-3 pumps, restore confidence to the skin of men in their 40s.
