INTERVIEW | To Commemorate the Release of 'How to Properly Settle a Grudge,' the Author Discusses a 'Constructive' Life Gallery

Nobuko Nakano (right), a neuroscientist, and Masato Sawada, a psychologist, co-authored "The Right Way to Settle a Grudge," released on February 3.
"Envy often stems from the anxiety that someone else has what you desire, or that your own share will diminish," says Sawada.
Sawada is an expert in negative emotions, researching "envy" and "grudges."
Nakano adds, "Emotions are living things, born out of necessity. It's wiser to use those emotions to achieve better outcomes."
The two agree: "To hold a grudge means you have the power to do so," says Nakano, while Sawada notes, "That energy is proof of your hurt. Recognizing that you are hurt is important."
"Even as academics, we are individuals living with our own struggles. I wrote about these without holding back," Nakano explains.
Nakano, on the other hand, is a researcher specializing in neuroscience.
Regarding "the right way to settle a grudge," Sawada states, "The first step is to acknowledge that you are experiencing negative emotions."
