<strong>Photobook App "Masahiro Nogami's SNAPSHOT DIARY"</strong> - January 1970. A drive along Route 16, which started with "I wonder if anything interesting will happen." I called Haruomi Hosono and suggested we drive towards Yokohama along Route 16, which felt American. Hosono liked driving, and I had seen Daido Moriyama's photos of Route 16 in "Camera Mainichi" at the time, so I thought we could have fun taking pictures from the car. I shot, and Hosono drove. © Mike Nogami
<strong>Photobook App "Masahiro Nogami's SNAPSHOT DIARY"</strong> - April 1970. For the production of "Happy End" (released August 1970), which became a landmark album for Japanese rock, the members were, of course, committed to exploring the rock music they envisioned and setting it to Japanese lyrics, with all original songs. But they were also passionate about improving the quality of the recordings themselves.<br>Hosono had been dissatisfied with Japanese recordings being inferior to authentic American ones long before the April Fool sessions. To put it in terms an amateur like myself could understand, the vocals were too prominent, lacking a sense of unity between the singing and the instruments, and the drums sounded too light, without the impactful, resonant feel that touches the soul. The difference in sound between Western rock and Japanese records, which were centered on popular songs, was clear. © Mike Nogami

Central Apartment stood at the corner of Omotesando and Meiji Dori in Harajuku, where "Tokyu Plaza Omotesando Harajuku" is now. Along with Coop Olympia and Yamate Church, it was an icon of early 70s Harajuku. There was no subway yet, Takeshita Street was just a back alley, and Harajuku was a quiet town with little foot traffic. Since there seem to be no proper photos of Central Apartment still in existence, I regret not taking this picture more seriously! © Mike Nogami

Covering my ears with my hands makes the beauty of the urban night stand out. I took many night photos. An old-style phone booth, which was becoming rare even then.
