Junji Tanigawa | Series Vol. 5: "Delvaux Gallery" Gallery

The limited-time project "Delvaux Gallery" was held for about two months from the end of April.
Delvaux, celebrating its 185th anniversary this year, is the world's oldest luxury leather brand. This time, they partnered to transform Omotesando's EYE OF GYRE into a Delvaux-themed space.
The idea was to create a "gallery" during the flagship store's renovation to generate buzz, allowing visitors to experience the world of Delvaux.
Inside the venue, a whimsical room inspired by the brand's character, "Madame Delvaux," was also featured.
I visited Delvaux's headquarters in Brussels. Renovated from a building in an old factory complex, what struck me most were the "columns." These steel structures, over 100 years old, formed sensuously curved lines, their riveted rhythm exuding an indescribable charm.
The atelier incorporates not only handcraftsmanship but also state-of-the-art machinery and technology to enhance precision. Young apprentices learn alongside seasoned artisans. This balanced fusion of technology and craftsmanship continually breathes new life into the brand.
The commitment to "continuously create new things" has endured for 185 years. What's particularly memorable is how the people within the company genuinely seem to enjoy this evolution.

Several examples of the "uniqueness" born from Delvaux's atelier were brought to Omotesando. For instance, a motorcycle created with Solex, displayed alongside Tintin, a representative Belgian character.

A photograph suddenly caught my eye, featured in Wallpaper magazine. It captured the precise work of the artisans, the conversations of the staff, the sound of the cutting materials and carts carrying supplies. The light streaming through my favorite "columns" and the glass-covered canopy. This photo held the atmosphere I found so appealing. Photo by Mathieu Ridelle
I decided to build this exhibition around this single photograph. The encounter with this image provided the core concept for the exhibition's design. The entrance is a giant photo frame, leading into a space like an optical illusion where the photograph and exhibits are intricately combined. It's like stepping into a real-life "Alice in Wonderland."
At the center of the space, we recreated the impressive columns that symbolized the atelier. This large, diagonally tilted lighting table is the centerpiece of the wonderland. Bags proudly 'walk' across this table, designed to evoke a fashion show runway.
The adjacent room is a pop-up shop displaying the latest items. It's designed simply to highlight the products. The display counters feature antique tops and recreated legs from old factory machinery.
To create a sense of the extraordinary, the display shelves for the bags use light to express a feeling of weightlessness.
The product shelves have no visible supports; the necessary surfaces project directly from the wall. The seams are meticulously finished to create an illusion of infinite depth.
The space narrating the maison's timeless DNA is black-based, while the area discussing cutting-edge fashion is white-based. By creating a clear contrast and separation between these concepts, a unique, pop-up museum embodying the spirit of Delvaux was born.
