The BMW i Incident | BMW Gallery

The BMW i vehicle assembly plant in Leipzig, Germany. Four wind turbines on site generate all the electricity needed for production.
The BMW i3, a compact car that marked the debut of BMW's first mass-produced electric vehicle.
The BMW i8, a plug-in hybrid sports car with specifications befitting a pure sports vehicle.
In February 2011, BMW launched its new brand, BMW i, focused on connected mobility.
The raw material (PAN precursor) for carbon fiber used in the i3 and i8, produced by Mitsubishi Rayon in Hiroshima Prefecture.
At SGL ACF, a joint venture with BMW in Moses Lake, USA, the material is processed into carbon fiber. Production energy at this plant is entirely supplied by renewable hydropower, resulting in zero CO2 emissions.

At SGL ACF's second facility in Wackersdorf Innovation Park, Germany, the carbon fiber bundles produced in Moses Lake, USA, are processed into lightweight carbon fiber fabric.
Carbon fiber exhibits high wear resistance along the direction of the fibers, allowing for enhanced strength in CFRP components by aligning the fibers with the direction of applied load. Therefore, when processing into CFRP parts, the fibers are arranged in 'stacks' oriented towards the load-bearing direction, then cut to the required shape through various processes.

Pre-formed carbon fiber stacks.
Pre-formed carbon fiber stacks. The cut stacks sent from Wackersdorf are transformed into CFRP body components at the production facilities in Landshut and Leipzig.
Completed CFRP body components.
The pre-formed carbon fiber stacks are joined with resin using the RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) method. This marks the world's first successful mass production of large-scale CFRP composite components through automation.
CFRP parts delivered from the press line are joined at the new body manufacturing facility in Leipzig.
The i3's interior, enveloped in an organic ambiance. Materials like carpets made from kenaf, a plant that grows rapidly during Bangladesh's monsoon season, cover the dashboard, immediately conveying an impression of environmental friendliness.

Recycled carbon fiber is also used for parts of the roof and interior.
The process of joining the life module (top), made of carbon fiber, with the drive module (bottom), made of aluminum.
After final inspection, they are delivered to users worldwide.
