Human Instinct and 'i3' – Architect Kimihiko Okada's Perspective | BMW

Architect Kimihiko Okada, who always considers how his buildings relate to the sun's movement, gravity, and large landforms, has a unique perspective. How does the BMW i strike him?
Kimihiko Okada, a leading Japanese architect who creates buildings and designs that endure and are cherished while adapting to changing times, test-drove BMW's first electric vehicle, the "i3."
Okada experienced the i3 in Aoyama, Tokyo. He operated the key, opened the door, and settled into the driver's seat.
"It's as quiet as a PC when you turn it on. And when you press the accelerator, it moves off so smoothly," said Okada.
The high-gloss black belt that connects the bonnet, roof, and rear end is a distinctive exterior design feature of the BMW i3.
The BMW i3's coach doors open outwards from the center. They are designed for easy entry and exit.
Okada commented, "It's much cuter than I expected from the photos. In a word, it's 'coolly cute' (laughs)."
The BMW i3 is equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels that enhance its sporty appearance. Reduced rolling resistance and excellent aerodynamics contribute to efficient driving.
Natural materials such as kenaf and recycled plastics were used in the BMW i3's interior.
The cockpit design of the BMW i3 features accents of blue, symbolizing the i series.
All analog instruments found in conventional cars have been eliminated, replaced by a cockpit with two digital LCD monitors.
By eliminating the need for an engine at the front of the car, the BMW i3 also does away with the center tunnel that previously divided the cabin floor, creating a more spacious interior.
