ARQUISTE | New York's Emerging Fragrance House, Founded by an Architect, Arrives in Japan Gallery
An interview with architect Carlos Huber, who directs the brand.
"Boutonniere no. 7," selected as one of the top five fragrances by the Fragrance Foundation, often called the "Oscars of the perfume world." The scent's stage is the main lobby of the Paris Opera in May 1899, highlighted by the sweet aroma of gardenias pinned to the lapels of gentlemen in black tie.
Carlos is responsible for design and creative research. The perfumers are Yann Vasnier and Rodrigo Flores-Roux, both sought-after noses behind popular fragrances.
Carlos also handles product design. The bottles are an exquisite size, easy for women to hold, with a rounded form that fits comfortably in the hand and a refined, simple finish. The brand logo is discreet, with only the letter "A" engraved on the gold-colored cap.
The current lineup consists of seven fragrances: floral, spicy, leather, powdery, citrus, and woody base notes. They are not strictly divided into men's and women's scents, featuring a characteristic unisex appeal.
In just three years since its launch in 2011, ARQUISTE has established partnerships with major department stores worldwide. His youth, at just 33, is astonishing. He has a calming presence that puts those around him at ease, complemented by a charming smile.
Among ARQUISTE's seven fragrances, his personal favorite is "Fleur de Louis," a floral note. For Japanese women, he recommends "Infanta en Flor," which is smooth and powdery like soft suede, and "L'Etrog," with its fresh citrus notes.
Both "Fleur de Louis" and "Infanta en Flor" were created inspired by June 1660 on Pheasant Island in the Basque region, on the border of Spain and France. The former captures a historical moment from the French side, while the latter views it from the Spanish perspective.
His idea of applying perfume to areas where you want someone to get closer is a fresh take on how to use fragrance. Furthermore, while I had always thought of perfume as something to be worn for oneself, he explains that it is meant for the other person. It's about choosing a scent that suits the occasion and applying it to points that appeal to others. This is a new etiquette for fragrance to keep in mind.
Carlos likens architecture and perfumery. His novel concepts, born from a blend of the artistic sensibility that values inspiration and the logical thinking of an architect, become more intriguing the more you learn about them. He is set to release two new fragrances in June.
Carlos is currently researching the diplomatic mission led by Tsunenaga Hasekura, which traveled from Japan to Europe. We eagerly anticipate the stories that will inspire his new fragrances.
