Cartier | 'Cartier, Style and History' Exhibition Held in Paris

Cartier | 'Cartier, Style and History' Exhibition Held in Paris

Flamingo Brooch by the Duchess of Windsor (1940)

The Duchess of Windsor owned a vast collection of jewelry. It is said that one day, a group of precious gemstones were removed from it and placed on the table at Cartier's workshop at 13 Rue de la Paix. Seeing these sapphires, rubies, and emeralds, Jeanne Toussaint conceived the idea for a bird brooch. She envisioned creating a flamingo with a majestic size and wings of astonishing, vibrant colors. Upon seeing the brooch, the Duchess was instantly captivated. This episode illustrates the shared taste between Jeanne and the Duke and Duchess. In 2010, Cartier acquired this brooch and added it to its collection.

N. Herrmann, Cartier Collection © Cartier

It features a modern aesthetic that fuses simplified forms with vibrant colors. It is also a superb example of Parisian style, which masterfully balances avant-garde sensibilities with exquisite craftsmanship and lightness.

Nick Welsh, Cartier Collection © Cartier

The Mystery Clock was born in 1912 through the collaboration of Louis Cartier and Maurice Couet.

N. Herrmann, Cartier Collection © Cartier
Cartier | 'Cartier, Style and History' Exhibition Held in Paris

Panthère Vanity Case (1928)

In the 1920s, Jeanne Toussaint, with the collaboration of Cartier's designers, became the head of the small leather goods and other product department at the Paris flagship boutique, overseeing a variety of items. During this period, many delicate vanity cases were created. In 1933, Jeanne was appointed Director of the High Jewelry Department, where her impeccable taste and boldness profoundly influenced the Cartier style. Jeanne also introduced the Panthère (panther) motif, which, after being featured on several pieces, became an emblem of Cartier and a particular favorite of the Duchess of Windsor.

© Cartier
Cartier | 'Cartier, Style and History' Exhibition Held in Paris

Tiara (1934)

By introducing platinum into the world of jewelry, Louis Cartier brought about a true revolution in both technique and style. Cartier was the first jeweler to set diamonds in platinum, with tiaras being the most prominent examples. This technique, developed in the early 1900s, allowed for the creation of pieces with a delicate beauty and an unprecedented sense of lightness, weaving together wonderfully skillful craftsmanship. This technique quickly captivated the hearts of royalty across Europe and the world.

N. Welsh, Cartier Collection © Cartier
