INTERVIEW | Tomoyo Harada on 'Silencio'

Taking on her first stage role in 30 years with 'Silencio'

Staged in 2008, the now-legendary play 'Otoko ga Kūhaku ni Ochita' (The Man Who Fell Into Blankness). Starring dancer Yasuyuki Shuto. Written and directed by Shuji Onodera. 'There are moments where beauty and interest are conveyed purely through the body, through movement itself, and then there are parts that become conventional acting. These shift instantaneously. Like 'Otoko ga Kūhaku ni Ochita,' this is a type of play I've never seen before.'

'This production has no script. So, rather than memorizing lines and rehearsing, it felt like a collaborative effort where we create it together as we move. We carefully craft each scene, then assemble the many completed scenes like puzzle pieces to form the work.'
'Every scene requires a great deal of expression through the body, so naturally, it demands extensive practice. But it's not enough for the body to simply remember; the mind must also be engaged. I've thought about this feeling, and I think the closest analogy is a band.'
Harada, who celebrated her 30th anniversary last year. 'My present is the result of meeting the right people at the right time. I don't think I could have taken on 'Silencio' if it were a few years ago, but now I have the courage to step into the largely unknown world of the stage.'
'Regarding the content, it's difficult to explain as a story, but I believe audiences will find it purely interesting from a visual perspective. The absence of words allows for a wide range of imagination. As a result, I believe it will be a work that moves someone's heart. I truly believe that.'
Actress Tomoyo Harada. Made her film debut in 'Toki o Kakeru Shōjo' (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) in 1983. Recent works include the NHK serial TV novel 'Ohisama' (2011), the film 'Shiawase no Pan' (2012), and 'Pekorosu no Haha ni Ai ni Iku' (scheduled for nationwide release November 2013). As a singer, she has consistently released albums since her debut. To commemorate her 30th anniversary last year, she is holding a nationwide series of 'on-doc.' (Ondoku) events combining song and recitation. With her innocent presence and clarity, she is supported by audiences of all generations.
