The ancestor of the Jeep began development in 1940 at the request of the US Army and was put into practical use in 1941, based on a design by American Bantam Company. Production and improvements were also carried out by Willys and Ford, with Willys producing the Willys MA and Ford producing the Ford GP. The photograph shows the Willys MB, an improved version of the Willys MA. The Ford GPW mentioned in the text is fundamentally the same vehicle as this Willys MB.
