INTERVIEW | Artist Tatsuo Nishino Interview Gallery

Tatzu Nishi, in New York
Nishi has undertaken various art projects worldwide, with one of his representative works being "The Merlion Hotel," exhibited at the 2011 Singapore Biennale (continued in Gallery No. 21).
Tatzu Nishi The Merlion Hotel, 2011, Marina Bay, Singapore
Photo: Yusuke Hattori, Courtesy of the artist and ARATANIURANO
In 1997, Nishi first attempted an installation in his signature style of "enclosing an outdoor stone monument," titled "obdach." The stone monument targeted at that time was "Der Tauzieher."
Tazro Niscino obdach, 1997, Cologne, Germany
(Sculpture: Der Tauzieher, 1908, Nikolaus Friedrich)
Photo by Detlef Ritz, Courtesy of the artist and ARATANIURANO

Nishi's latest work is "Discovering Columbus." For about two and a half months from late September 2012, he created a "living room" by completely enclosing the Columbus statue towering over the streets of New York.
Tatzu Nishi Discovering Columbus
Photo: Go Sugimoto, Courtesy of the artist and ARATANIURANO
"The total cost for 'Discovering Columbus' was about 200 million yen, and it was organized by a non-profit organization called the Public Art Fund. It was all funded by donations. It's amazing that New York has so many wealthy individuals who donate large sums to art, starting with Mayor Bloomberg."

"Discovering Columbus" The Columbus statue is built at a considerable height, so unless you look far up, you wouldn't notice it while walking normally.

"What I create is minimal. When I first build a room, I design it based on the average room size of that country. I don't alter the monument itself. In other words, it's a minimal interior."

Tatzu Nishi says, "There is value in what no one has seen before." How will he surprise the world next?
