Designer Takashi Kanoko discusses the creation of the new RFW

RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
This year marks the 15th anniversary of RHYTHM FOOT WEAR, which has rebranded as RFW starting with its latest collection. By integrating the boot collection RFW and the bag collection RAD, the brand image has been unified. Expectations are high for its future developments, with a greater emphasis on originality. We spoke with designer Takashi Kanoko about the 2012 Spring/Summer collection, the first under the new RFW banner.

From top left: "Moca Suede," "Kona Suede," "Assam Suede." RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
"Rhythm is something essential for living, and I hope RFW can become an indispensable part of people's lives," says designer Takashi Kanoko.
RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
"We took the initials from 'RHYTHM FOOT WEAR' to make 'RFW.' It's partly because we're celebrating our 15th anniversary, but I also thought it would be a way to present the brand name like a mark. I don't necessarily want people to recognize the brand just by looking at the logo; I want to create shoes that are identifiable by their shape alone."

The classic canvas series has been renewed! The "Sandwich Lo" is characterized by its distinctive two-panel upper design. A hook made of the same material as the upper is attached to the tongue, aiding in putting the shoes on and off, and also serving as an icon for this model.
RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
This is the leather version of the classic "Bagel" model. The entire upper is made of domestically sourced soft steer leather in fresh, natural tones, resulting in a sophisticated pair of shoes.
RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
"As shoes, they simply don't work if they're uncomfortable. For example, with the 'Sandwich,' the bold cut on the side panels is not only an interesting design element, but the panels are also cut and rejoined precisely at the point where the foot flexes."
RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
The cup-insole, with a cork surface, is designed with a raised arch support in the center. This enhances stability and aids in walking.
RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
"We don't set specific seasonal themes. We also don't pay much attention to shoe or fashion trends. Based on the inspiration I have at the time, I create two or three new models each season, and for the classic models, we vary the colors and materials."
RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
"Since the upper design can sometimes be hidden by pants, we focus on originality in the sole, such as the vibrant blue outsole, the thick side lines, and the wavy line on the 'Moca Suede.'"
RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
"This wavy line is made by bonding rubber of different colors. However, when heat is applied, the lines don't come out very cleanly... it was quite a struggle."
RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
The "Moca Suede" has an elastic band inside the tongue, allowing it to be worn as a slip-on without laces.
RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
You can enjoy different looks by either tucking the elastic band under the tongue or leaving it exposed on top of the upper.
RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
"Foot shapes vary, and preferences differ for comfort and balance with outfits, so it's hard to say definitively. However, the "Moca Suede" and "Kona Suede" are designed with a relaxed, comfort-oriented fit and have a voluminous appearance, so we recommend wearing them in your exact size. For the "Sandwich" and "Bagel," you might want to allow about 1cm of extra space."
RFW | RHYTHM FOOT WEAR - Designer Takashi Kanoko on the Creation of the New RFW
"Currently, our main market is fashion, but in the future, I want to create products that can also be accepted by specialty shoe stores. And eventually, I hope to make shoes like Converse's All Star or Vans' Slip-On, worn by everyone from stylish adults to ordinary junior high school students."
