ニューヨークの隠れ家的エコサロン「ION Studio」

ソーホーにあるサロン「ION Studio」にたどり着くには、ビルの中の狭い通路を通り抜けてビルの反対側に出る。裏側なので暗いのかと思いきやスペースに足を踏み入れたとたん、吹き抜けになった天井窓から入る気持ちのよい自然光に出迎えられる。
天井も高く広々と感じる空間は平和でリラックスしたオーラに包まれている。受付のひとたちもにこやかに対応してくれた。正面ではちょうど、Pasqualeがカットをしている。
私を見つけると『Hey, Munemi!』と笑顔で抱擁してくれた。

One sunny afternoon, I walk into the building in Soho. I go through a little path to get to this hidden salon that is at the back of the building. As I enter, I see a beautiful skylight over head. It has a very peaceful, relaxing energy. Everyone has a smile on their faces that is not typical New York. Here, Pasquale is cutting a client’s hair and looks at me and says “Hey, Munemi!” He welcomes me with a warm hug.

すべてに、エコフレンドリーなサロン「ION Studio」

『ION Studio』は2008年5月にオープン。イタリア出身の、Leonardo Manetti、Marco Santini、Pasquale Ferreante の3人の共同経営だ。皆、フリーランス活動を活発に行っていて、今までに手がけた雑誌は、『Vogue』、『Harper’s Bazaar』、『ID』、『Dazed and Confused』などをはじめ、多岐に渡って活躍している。
彼らは皆それぞれに才能あふれたアーティストで、業界では一目置かれる存在だが、私としては彼らの個々の魅力的な人柄が最高だ。3人は長年の友人同士で、LeonardoとMarcoにいたってはイタリアの高校以来の付き合いとなっている。

ION Studio was started in May 2008 by three Italian hair stylists: Leonardo Manetti, Marco Santini and Pasquale Ferreante. Their prolific editorial work has been seen in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, ID, and Dazed and Confused. I had met all of them before visiting the salon at photo shoots. They all are extremely talented and well-respected hair stylists in the industry. But what I love the most about them is their personalities and charm. They have been very good friends for a long time; Leonard and Marco have been friends since a high school.

「自分としては、もっと小さめで家族経営みたいな、それでいてグリーンを感じるサロンにしたかった。自分たちはお客さんにももっと身近に接したかったし。だから道に面してないスペースを見つけた。ここを探すのに随分かかったよ」
Leonard が14年間、Bumble and Bumble に勤めた後にこのエコフレンドリーなサロンを開くきっかけを話してくれた。

「このお店の中のものはすべて再生資源でつくられているんだ。椅子もふくめてすべてのものがオーダーメイド。うちで使っているすべての照明はエコフレンドリーだし、風力発電の電気を使っている」
「ヘアプロダクトはイタリア製のDavine というラインを使っている。自然成分が使われているし、この会社は環境にいいポリシーをもっていて、二酸化炭素を排出しないようにLife Gateというイタリアのリニューアブルエナジーの先駆けの電力供給会社と仕事をしている」。
Leonardo explains about opening this eco friendly salon after having worked at Bumble and Bumble for 14 years. “I wanted to do a little more small company and a little more family oriented and the same time feeling green. We wanted to be more personal to our clients so we found a place with no street front. It took a while to find this space.” He continues: “We are 100% sustainable. Everything is custom made from the chairs to all the stuff in the salon are all reclaimed materials. And all the lighting we use are eco friendly and we also use wind power.” Then he shows me a line of products. “We also use Davine that is an Italian eco friendly line. They use natural ingredients and have a good philosophy that produces no CO2 and work with Life Gate that is Italy’s leading supplier of renewable energy. ”

いま欲しいのは、なにかもっと、持続していけるもの

サロンスペースはスリーレベルから成り立っている。ここにあるすべてのものがシンプルだ。まさに必要なものしかない、そんな感じだ。Leonardoがつづける。
「もしここに来たひとたちが少しでもインスパイアされてその感じを家にもって帰る。そうだったらいいなって思う」
アメリカのバブル経済が破綻した今、以前の“なんでも多いほどよい”といった感じや、後先を考えないで買い物をし過ぎたアメリカにはこの感じが今ちょうどしっくり来る。なにかもっと、持続していけるもの。

The salon has three levels. Everything here is very simply made. It has just what it needs, the minimum. Leonardo says, “It would be nice if people come here and get inspired a bit and go home with it.” And after a few years of the housing bubble that made us feel like more is better and consume recklessly, it feels just right this way- something that is sustainable.

サロンワークと撮影のバランスを聞いてみた。
「もともとサロンでヘアスタイリストをはじめたんだ。10年サロンに勤めてから、今も精力的につづけているフリーランスの仕事もはじめていったんだ。でもやっぱり自分はサロンに戻って来て自分のお客さんもしなくちゃだめ。自分の足を地に付けさせてくれるし。それに、撮影の仕事ではあまりカットをすることはなくて、主にスタイリングをすることだし。自分は両方することによって幸せでいられるから。それにいいヘアカットはひとを一瞬にして変えることができるから。そのときにお客さんが返してくれるエナジーって、ものすごいんだ。それって撮影で得られるものより全然大きい」
I ask him about balancing salon work and a freelance career. “I started being a hair stylist in a salon. Then after 10 years working in a salon I started doing freelance work that I still actively do. But I have to come back to a salon to do my clients. That keeps me grounded. Also it’s really rare to cut hair on a shoot. It’s normally more about styling. I need to do both to be happy. And it’s an instant redefinition when you do a good haircut, when you please a client. The energy she gives back to you is so much more powerful than actually being on a photo shoot.”

ヘアやアートに対する、人生や笑いに対する愛がすべて詰め込まれているサロン

彼らはここでアートも展示する。
「つい昨日まで自分の友人のフォトグラファーのDusan Rejinのファインアートの写真を見せてたんだ。新しいオープニングはこの木曜日の夜。オープンバーもあるし、音楽もかけるし、君もおいでよ」
They also show art here. “We were just showing my friend photographer, Dusan Rejin’s fine art until yesterday. And we have a new opening this Thursday evening. We have an open bar and music, you should come.”

その週のオープニングのためにまたサロンに戻る。ショウのためにスペースは空にされている。アートを見せるにも素晴らしい空間だ。すぐにたくさんの人びとでさっきまで空いていたスペースが埋まる。それぞれがドリンクを片手に会話を楽しみながらのいいひとときを過ごしている。そのとき、Leonardoがインタビューで言ったことがよくわかった。
「自分たちはこのスペースをただヘアサロンだと思ってないんだ。ここは出会いの場所でもある。ここでいろんなアーティストの展示をして、人びとが楽しい時間を過ごしながらそれぞれの意見を交換する。ほかのひとたちがアートを通してどんなものを見ているかを知るのがすごく刺激になるんだ」

彼らはここで展示をするアーティストにチャージをしない。ほぼ信じがたい。でも彼らを知るにつれてわかってきた。ここには彼らのヘアに対する、アートに対する、そして人生や笑いに対する愛がすべて詰め込まれている。それはお金にかえることはできない。
Later that week, I returned for an opening. It is also a great space to show art. They cleaned out everything for the opening. Soon the empty space was filled with people talking and having a good time. And I realized that what he said to me in the interview is true: “We don’t see the space just as a hair salon, it’s also a meeting place. When we show different artists, people exchange their ideas and have a good time. It’s inspiring to learn what other people see through art.” They don’t charge for the artists they show here. It’s almost unreal. But getting to know them made me also understand that their love of hair, art, life and laughter, is all here: it’s priceless.
