Faithfully recreating the 1950s original with a modern, high-performance movement
The new "Longines Silver Arrow" is a timepiece that conveys the positive aura of the 1950s, an era captivated by the buzz of race cars and supersonic jets. This piece faithfully reproduces the original "Silver Arrow" model, inspired by the forward-looking mood of the time when the future held such promise.
In 1955, Longines designed a new watch with an avant-garde aesthetic and held an internal competition for its name. From over 450 submissions, the name "Silver Arrow" was chosen, based on one of the entries. This was inspired by the prestigious car marques that captivated the motorsport world at the time, and the watch was launched the following year, in 1956. In those days, each Longines collection featured an emblem; for the "Silver Arrow," the motif was a supersonic jet, a nod to Longines' respect for the world of aeronautics and its pioneers.
Then, in 2021, Longines revived the "Longines Silver Arrow." This timepiece, which inherits the characteristics of the 1950s original, features modern functionality through cutting-edge watchmaking technology and a silhouette that exudes understated elegance. The slightly modest 38.5mm stainless steel case houses an automatic mechanical movement (Caliber L888.5) with a silicon balance spring. It boasts enhanced precision and magnetic field resistance, further backed by a five-year warranty as proof of its reliability.
The minimalist silver opaline dial, conveying a sense of purity, is adorned with sword-shaped hands coated in Super-LumiNova® and stripe-shaped indices, similar to the original version. A box sapphire crystal with a multi-layered anti-reflective coating ensures excellent legibility. To remain faithful to the original watch, the date display and the "Automatic" designation have been deliberately omitted from the dial. The screw-down case back is engraved with a supersonic jet, three stars, and the "Silver Arrow" emblem, while a matte brown leather strap with a vintage finish and soft texture perfectly complements the timepiece's style.
