A Historic Pilot's Watch Returns, Now with Enhanced COSC Certification!
From Longines, renowned as a pioneer in pilot's watches, comes the "Longines Pilot Majetek." This new model evolves the design and functionality of its historic 1935 predecessor.
Performance Evolved, a Direct Descendant of the 1935 Model
With over 190 years of history, Swiss watchmaker Longines has accompanied pioneers in air, land, and sea, developing timepieces that lead their eras. Maintaining its headquarters in its founding location to this day, the brand consistently delivers timepieces that fuse its rich heritage, backed by a long history, with cutting-edge technology.
One such creation was the "Majetek," introduced in 1935. Developed for aviators, it captivated many with its toughness, accuracy, legibility, and reliability. Its distinctive features included a highly curved "cushion-shaped case" and a "rotating bezel" with a marker to indicate the start time. This unique "cushion-shaped case" design was registered with the International Intellectual Property Organization in Bern, Switzerland, on April 1, 1935.
This year, 2023, this iconic historic model's DNA is reborn as the new "Longines Pilot Majetek."
The new "Longines Pilot Majetek" represents a significant evolution in both design and functionality. Its most defining characteristics are the "cushion-shaped stainless steel case" and the "bi-directional fluted rotating bezel," continuing the lineage of the 1935 model.
The "cushion-shaped stainless steel case" features a gentler curve than the original. Beyond the case's curvature, the case size and more rounded lugs reflect current trends while ensuring exceptional comfort. It is available with a brown leather strap featuring beige topstitching, and a NATO-style strap made from recycled polyester fiber. A commemorative plate engraved with "1935," the year the first model was born, adorns the exterior of the case at the 9 o'clock position.
The "bi-directional fluted rotating bezel," mounted externally, works in conjunction with the triangular marker with luminous paint on the inside (indicating the start time) and provides 100-meter water resistance. The triangular marker is positioned between the sapphire crystal and the dial. By securing the sapphire glass and rotating only the fluted bezel and marker, the case's water resistance is enhanced.
The stainless steel case features a patented gear mechanism and a screw-down case back. It is powered by Longines' exclusive caliber "L893.6," equipped with a silicon balance spring for antimagnetic properties and boasting approximately 72 hours of power reserve. The entire watch head has achieved chronometer certification from the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), an independent body (*).
* While standard COSC certification involves testing the caliber's accuracy in batches before assembly into the watch head, a more rigorous certification has recently been introduced. This new standard involves accuracy checks on every individual watch head after assembly. Notably, this new certification is not only a first for Longines but also for all Swiss watch brands. The official name for this certification has not yet been determined.
The "Longines Pilot Majetek" also excels in embodying the iconic characteristics of a pilot's watch. Its matte black dial offers excellent legibility, complemented by Arabic numerals with Old Radium-colored Super-LumiNova®, railroad minute markers, and baton hands in Old Radium color, all treated with luminous paint for superior visibility at night. The small seconds dial at 6 o'clock, along with the fluted rotating bezel, showcases the functional beauty unique to pilot's watches.
Priced at 550,000 yen (tax included), this timepiece offers a unique character while achieving a meticulous balance of details befitting a pilot's watch.
