Expressing the Rich Scenery of Japan's Changing Seasons on the Dial
Grand Seiko's brand philosophy is "THE NATURE OF TIME." This view of nature, that "the essence of time exists with all things in nature," has been nurtured alongside Japan's unique four seasons. The deep connection between people and nature is also evident in the "Nijūshichihon-sekki" (24 Solar Terms), which divides the year into 24 segments and assigns names to periods based on the season, including the transition points. These have become deeply ingrained in the lives of people living in Japan as markers for sensing the changes in daily life and the blessings of nature throughout the seasons.
Four models have been announced, themed around four of these solar terms that strongly evoke seasonal changes, dramatically expressing the natural scenery on their dials: two "Grand Seiko Elegance Collection Mechanical Hi-Beat GMT" models and two "Grand Seiko Elegance Collection Spring Drive GMT" models.
The "Grand Seiko Elegance Collection Mechanical Hi-Beat GMT" models express Shunbun (Spring Equinox) and Shosho (Minor Heat). Shunbun marks the time when day and night are nearly equal in length, a season when trees that have endured the cold begin to bud and bloom. Inspired by the delicate mountain cherry blossoms that quietly begin to color the remote mountains, these models combine a vibrant GMT hand with a green dial to represent the arrival of spring.
Shosho refers to the period when the rainy season ends and the sun's brilliance intensifies. It is a season when the white southern winds (shira-e/shira-sae) that blow after the rainy season rustle through the trees and ripple the water's surface, evoking the dynamism of nature. The refreshing light blue dial expresses the gentle ripples created by the southern winds, and the Hi-Beat 10-beat movement's ticking evokes the sound of the waves.
The "Grand Seiko Elegance Collection Spring Drive GMT" models express the scenes of Kanro (Cold Dew) and Toji (Winter Solstice). Kanro signifies the time when cold dew settles on plants, and the mornings and evenings become cool and crisp as autumn deepens, offering a sense of tranquility during the long autumn nights. On the black dial, designed to evoke the night, a GMT hand reminiscent of the moon's glow peeking through the mackerel sky creates a model of serene beauty.
The model expressing Toji (Winter Solstice) is inspired by the scenery of the beginning of deep winter, when the days are shortest and the cold is most intense. It features a white dial reminiscent of a silent, snow-covered plain, paired with a pink gold GMT hand that evokes the warm glow of the setting sun.
