Parmigiani Fleurier won the 'Chronograph Watch Prize' and the 'Travel Time Watch Prize' at the 'Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG)', often referred to as the Academy Awards of the Swiss watch industry.
The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève is decided by the votes of 28 international watch journalists and industry professionals. Selections are made from new models announced in 2017 across 15 categories.
Founded in 1996 by watchmaker and restorer Michel Parmigiani, this is the maison's first coveted award in its 21st year.
The 'Chronograph Prize' was awarded to the 'Tonda Chronor Anniversaire'. This model, released to commemorate the brand's 20th anniversary, features an integrated chronograph. While many chronographs incorporate a chronograph module onto a base movement, an integrated chronograph has all its mechanisms built into the mainplate.
In this model, the movement's second column wheel activates the split-seconds hand in sync with the chronograph seconds, while also engaging a clutch mechanism for lap time measurement.
Integrated movements offer the advantages of a simpler structure, improved accuracy, and enhanced stability, but are known for their extreme manufacturing difficulty. This marked Parmigiani Fleurier's first attempt at such a construction. The success of this model can be seen as a testament to the potential of an independent manufacture.
The 'Travel Time Watch Prize' winner, the 'Trick hémisphère rétrograde', is equipped with the world's first mechanism capable of displaying two time zones with minute-level precision using a single caliber.
This was developed, inspired by a watch discovered during restoration work. Many GMT watches are designed for hourly time difference adjustments, but numerous regions have time differences in 15- or 30-minute increments, and this watch accommodates such variations.
It also features a jumping retrograde date display that instantly resets, which is the origin of the model's name. The Trick collection, characterized by the 'mortars' decoration on the bezel, is based on the first model conceived by founder Michel for Parmigiani Fleurier.
In addition to its user-friendly GMT function, it is a practical model with a 50-hour power reserve thanks to its twin barrels.
