The first new caliber in 8 years, featuring GS's first small seconds and power reserve indicator.

Since its inception in 1960, Grand Seiko has pursued and achieved the essential qualities of a wristwatch: accuracy, beauty, and legibility. Now, a series equipped with a newly developed manual-winding movement (Caliber 9S63) has been introduced.

Caliber 9S63, developed for the first time in eight years for a mechanical manual-winding movement, is the first Grand Seiko model to feature a small seconds sub-dial and a power reserve indicator.

The case design harmoniously blends Grand Seiko's characteristic contrast with a soft texture. The dual-curved sapphire crystal, polished on both sides, forms a distortion-free dome. The dial also features a domed center, and the hands are gently curved, lending the watch a gentle and soft expression befitting a mechanical timepiece.

Of the three limited edition models, two in 18K rose gold feature the brand's first use of Japanese traditional lacquer art on the dial. Using rare, pure domestic lacquer sourced from Joboji Town, facing Mt. Iwate across from the Shizukuishi Watch Studio in northern Iwate Prefecture, the dials come in two finishes: a translucent lacquer (suki-urushi) revealing a pattern reminiscent of Mt. Iwate's slopes, and a jet-black lacquer with depth and a profound sheen.

Domestic lacquer, though difficult to handle due to its slow drying time compared to foreign varieties, offers superior durability and light resistance. This lacquer is applied uniformly with advanced techniques. Furthermore, lacquer artist Isshu Tamura of Kanazawa has applied high-relief gold lacquer (takamakie), embodying both the delicacy and strength of Kaga lacquerware, to the GS brand logo, the Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 o'clock, and the 10 hour markers, elevating the design to a three-dimensional and exquisite finish befitting Grand Seiko.

The other limited edition model, SBGK005, features a blue dial with a Mt. Iwate pattern. The sapphire crystal on the case back is adorned with a blue lion emblem, allowing the wearer to enjoy a "world of blue" with specially adopted blue steel screws.
