A Model Inheriting the History of Aircraft Manufacturing and Original Design
Beyond watchmaking, Breguet has also made significant contributions to the world of aviation.
Louis-Charles Breguet, the founder's grandson and the fifth generation, immortalized the innovative spirit of the watchmaker in the field of aviation, which the family had not previously explored.
Louis-Charles Breguet developed the gyroplane, considered the prototype of the helicopter, and in 1916, he also developed the aircraft "Breguet XIV." From 1917 to '26, Breguet manufactured approximately 8,000 of these legendary aircraft and developed chronographs for cockpit instruments. In 1935, Breguet produced its first wristwatch chronograph, and in '54, at the request of the French Naval Aviation, it manufactured the "Type XX (Twentieth)." This model was a famous chronograph that remained standard equipment for the French Air Force and Naval Aviation until the early 1980s.
In 2016, Breguet expanded this historic collection with the chronograph "Type XXI (Twenty-One) 3817," which combined a stainless steel case with a slate gray dial. The vintage aesthetic of the "Type XXI (Twenty-One) 3817" retained the original design rooted in the history of the "Type XX."
And in 2018, Breguet unveiled the limited edition "Type XXI (Twenty-One) 3817" at BASELWORLD 2018. Its exterior features a combination of an 18K rose gold case and a black dial. The automatic chronograph movement is equipped with a flyback function inherited from the 1954 "Type XX."
In this "Type XXI 3817," the central chronograph hand not only measures seconds but also indicates elapsed minutes on a coaxial central hand. Additionally, it features a 12-hour totalizer and date display at 6 o'clock, a day/night indicator at 3 o'clock, and a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o'clock, offering the allure of a complex multi-hand display. Furthermore, it incorporates a sapphire crystal case back for the first time in the "Type XX" series, allowing a view of the movement. The limited edition rose gold model is available exclusively at Breguet Boutique Ginza, Breguet's sole flagship store in Japan, and sales have already begun. Do not miss this opportunity.
