A New Coordination for Your Business Wardrobe (1)
“That smartphone case is lovely.” A fleeting glimpse as you pass someone can surprisingly linger in your memory. And the harmony of the accessories… it’s only natural, given that the smartphone case and watch strap are coordinated in the same material. Both smartphones and wristwatches are frequently seen in business settings, making them excellent means of expressing individuality. Jean Rousseau CEO Jacques Bordier is a fan of blue and his style is to coordinate his accessories in blue.

Be Stylish. Be Yourself.
Ordering a watch strap as a business essential is quietly gaining popularity. This is because even a familiar watch model can be reborn with a new atmosphere simply by changing the strap. The brand that popularized this practice is the French leather manufacturer "JEAN ROUSSEAU." Alongside brands like Camille Fournet and HIRSCH, Jean Rousseau is one of the three major factory brands that supply high-quality leather straps to Swiss luxury watch manufacturers.
Custom-ordered straps, meticulously measured for perfect balance, ensure the buckle sits directly behind the watch case when worn. This allows the watch case to sit comfortably and the strap to conform naturally to the wrist. The holes are, of course, single. The length of the strap extending beyond the buckle achieves a perfect, almost golden ratio balance.
Jean Rousseau is now proposing a business wardrobe styling that matches smartphone cases and watch straps in the same material. Jean Rousseau CEO Jacques Bordier explains.
“In the past, people would match watch straps with pants belts, or with shoes. This is an extension of that idea. Recently, smartphones have become a business item, and we often see people taking out their phones when meeting clients.”
Jean Rousseau was founded in 1954. It is a manufacturer specializing in watch straps, dedicated to the finest handmade craftsmanship. Jean Rousseau opened its first directly managed boutique six years ago. It now has directly managed boutiques in Paris, London, Tokyo, New York, and Macau, and has begun crafting smartphone cases and bags in response to requests from its most valued clients. This is, of course, for coordination with watch straps.
“Another idea is to coordinate watch straps with cardholders. When exchanging business cards for the first time, one always notices the other person’s hands. If there’s a stylish coordination in their line of sight, wouldn’t that create a good impression?”
The example below shows a coordination of a watch strap and a long wallet. The material is alligator, and Jean Rousseau boasts 300 color variations for this material alone. This extensive color range, surpassing other brands, is a testament to their ownership of their own tanneries. From earth tones to glossy finishes like enamel, no other brand offers such freedom in color selection.
You might be wondering about the price, but it’s actually not significantly different from ready-made items. If you can wait two to three weeks for production (depending on order volume), you can obtain a model that fits you perfectly.

Leather materials are waterproof, just like the popular smartphones
The biggest cause of watch strap damage is sweat. There was little that could be done about this; one could only diligently wipe off sweat or resign oneself to replacement when damage became severe. However, Jean Rousseau has arrived at a solution: waterproof alligator material. In fact, the alligator material introduced on the previous page is also this waterproof specification. As you can see, it repels water even if spilled.
Strictly speaking, however, this waterproof specification is not perfect. Moisture will eventually seep through the stitching and belt holes. However, it does not penetrate as easily as before, allowing the beautiful condition to be maintained for longer. It will withstand getting caught in the rain without issue. It is also ideal as a smartphone case, and can be recommended for the water-resistant "iPhone 7" and "iPhone 7 Plus" models.
Now, when asked about the best-selling materials for Jean Rousseau watch straps in the future, Jacques Bordier pointed to the following three types.
Platinum/Gold Stitching
This uses precious metals like platinum and gold processed into stitching material. It is an optional upgrade, available for an additional ¥20,000 (excluding tax) on top of the base leather. The samples shown are platinum, pink gold, and yellow gold stitching, from left to right.
Kevlar
Extremely thin yet highly tear-resistant and reliable. In addition to being used as a core material, there are also variations made entirely of Kevlar. As a core material, it is an optional upgrade available for an additional ¥5,000 (excluding tax) on top of the base leather. The price for the full Kevlar strap is yet to be determined.
Carbon Fiber
This is another high-tech option, woven with carbon fiber. It would pair well with models featuring carbon dials or cases. There are two types: calfskin with carbon print for ¥17,550 (excluding tax), and full carbon for ¥20,000 (excluding tax). Both are scheduled for release at the end of the year.
The best way to appreciate the texture of the materials is to touch the samples. We highly recommend visiting the Atelier Jean Rousseau Ginza, located along Ginza Namiki-dori. Furthermore, we have prepared a special gift of custom pen cases for three lucky OPENERS readers. If you wish to enter, please follow the instructions below.
