Makoto Arai, known for his visual work with artists like King Gnu, presents his first solo exhibition, "SUPER PRIVATE ― Facts Speak for Themselves ―".
Gallery.S presents Makoto Arai's first solo exhibition, "SUPER PRIVATE ― Facts Speak for Themselves ―," at Space√K (B1F, √K Contemporary) in Kagurazaka, Tokyo.
An installation of neon and paintings born from intensely personal experiences.
Makoto Arai joined the creative label PERIMETRON in 2018 and has since been a creator behind the artwork, visual design, and spatial design for artists leading Japan's music scene, such as King Gnu and MILLENNIUM PARADE. In 2021, he co-founded the creative collective MOSS STUDIO with actor Go Morita, actress Rie Miyazawa, and filmmaker OSRIN. He has independently pursued expressions that transcend genres, including music, film, fashion, jewelry, and food and beverage.
While Arai has primarily worked on client projects until now, this exhibition marks his step into autonomous creation as an artist, starting from memories and sensations deeply etched within his inner self. The exhibition title, "Facts Speak for Themselves," signifies experiences that remain ineffable even after confronting them with utmost dedication.
The venue features new works combining neon and paintings. The exhibition space, composed of nine scenes, unfolds like tracing fragmented moments from a film. Visitors, moving through the dimly lit space, are guided into a world where fragments of memory, reality and unreality, anxiety and elation, intimacy and solitude intersect, evoked by light and painting.
The exhibition is curated by Yosuke Takahashi, who previously served as Chief Curator at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, and Chief Curator at the Kadokawa Musashino Museum, before becoming an independent curator specializing in projects that bridge technology, life, and art.
This exhibition, where Arai's unique sensibility—cultivated through his visual expressions of the coexistence of life and death, celebration and ruin, beauty and terror, order and chaos—deepens into a more personal layer of memory and takes form as a singular space, serves as an occasion to mark Makoto Arai's new beginning.
