Global design converges on Osaka: "OSAKA×MILANO DESIGN LINK 2019"

Centered around the Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store's main building, the Shinsaibashi area is hosting "OSAKA×MILANO DESIGN LINK," a design event in collaboration with Milan's Salone del Mobile.Milano, the world's largest design event, which began on Saturday, October 12th.

From the Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store Main Building, running until November 4th

"OSAKA×MILANO DESIGN LINK" is a new event designed to invigorate Osaka through design, conceived to coincide with the grand opening of the Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store's main building on September 20, 2019.

For its inaugural year, the event has forged a partnership with Milan's Salone del Mobile.Milano, a design festival held annually in April in Osaka's sister city, Milan. This collaboration brings global design to Osaka, centered around the Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store's main building, to create a new wave of excitement.

The event features 23 carefully selected works from those that garnered attention at this year's Salone del Mobile.Milano, new creations by world-renowned designers inspired by Osaka, triumphant return exhibitions from Japanese companies, and original works by emerging artists active in the Kansai region, all adorning the streets of Osaka's Shinsaibashi district.

Exhibits within the Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store Main Building

The primary venues are the Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store's main building and its surrounding areas. Within the main building, an information space will be set up to provide details and locations of the various artworks displayed throughout the Shinsaibashi area. Additionally, 11 works will be exhibited in the show windows and on various floors throughout the building.

The Fuorisalone 2019 BEST SELECTION comprises works highly acclaimed at "Fuorisalone" held in Milan, Italy, this past April, curated by STUDIOLAB. These pieces will be displayed in special spaces on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 7th, and 9th floors of the main building.

Visitors can enjoy a diverse range of works, including unique interior collections inspired by imaginary monsters and aliens, decorative plant installations, a window that continuously projects the passage of time in a foreign land, and an experience that allows one to "hear" the sound of denim.

For the WINDOW SPECIAL PROJECT, a globally active Italian designer has created a new installation specifically for this event in Osaka. This original work, themed around "yokai" (Japanese spirits/monsters) inspired by the city of Osaka and "tokonoma" (a Japanese alcove for displaying art), will be exhibited in the main building's first-floor show window at the Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store.

The Fuorisalone 2019 JAPAN SELECTION showcases Japanese brands' works, which were first presented at "Fuorisalone" in April, making their triumphant return to Osaka. A special exhibition by the globally popular Japanese masking tape brand, mt, is being held on the 5th floor of the Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store.
