Music Knows No Borders, But It Has a Nationality

Formed in 2008, AUNJ is a unit that pursues a unique musicality by fusing Japanese instruments—such as the taiko drum, shamisen, koto, shakuhachi, shinobue flute, and percussion—which are not typically played together.

Eight virtuosos, each a leading figure in their respective traditional Japanese instruments, have come together to create a distinctive worldview, blending first-class classical techniques with the sensibilities of a new generation.

Their quality and performance, which strike a high balance between tradition and innovation, have earned them high acclaim internationally. They have performed at numerous World Heritage sites, including the first-ever live performance within Mont Saint-Michel in France. In 2013, starting with a concert at Angkor Wat, they toured all 10 ASEAN countries until 2016, successfully holding 'ONE ASIA Joint Concerts' with local folk instrument artists. In the United States, they performed the U.S. national anthem at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, in 2014, and played at the opening stage of the Washington D.C. Cherry Blossom Festival, increasingly establishing themselves as representatives of Japan.

We eagerly anticipate what kind of performance they will deliver on April 2nd at the Ueno Onshi Park Outdoor Stage, amidst the blooming cherry blossoms.
