The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko opens in May. Its design concept is a "residence in harmony with the nature of Oku-Nikko."

The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko opens on May 22, 2020. This international luxury hotel, with a design concept of "a residence in harmony with the nature of Oku-Nikko," is set to welcome guests.

A Sanctuary Where Japanese Spirit Meets Western Elegance

Nestled on the shores of Lake Chuzenji in Oku-Nikko, an area cherished as a summer retreat by foreign diplomats and dignitaries since the mid-Meiji era, fostering a unique culture. Drawing inspiration from this locale, The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko embodies a Japanese aesthetic that reveres and savors the beauty of the changing seasons. Its design concept, "a residence in harmony with the nature of Oku-Nikko," harmonizes Western and Japanese architectural styles.

We believe true luxury lies not in excessive ornamentation or grandiosity, but in spaces that allow one to fully immerse in the natural beauty of this land. We offer an elegant ambiance and moments of profound tranquility.

The design of the 94 guest rooms and suites, spread across the Main, Lake, and Mountain wings, as well as the Arrival Lobby on the first floor of the Main building, and the adjacent The Lobby Lounge, The Library, and The Bar, was crafted by LAYAN Architects + Designers, an Australian firm headquartered in Melbourne.

"Stepping into The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko is like arriving at a distinguished gentleman's residence, enveloped in a sophisticated yet warm and inviting atmosphere. There is no excessive opulence or oversized space here. The hotel's design philosophy is precisely about experiencing the interplay of light and shadow and the passage of seasons as told by Nikko's nature, immersing oneself in the beauty born from nature's ephemeral quality," comments Johannes Hart, Principal at LAYAN Architects + Designers.

Upon arrival, guests are warmly welcomed into the spacious Arrival Lobby after passing through a serene and evocative approach, marked by a striking stone facade and a prominent eave over the entrance, which seems to guide one into a tranquil, separate world.

The sophisticated lobby, featuring a custom reception desk crafted from chestnut wood and a handcrafted shelf made from repurposed art panels from the Nikko Lakeside Hotel, which operated for 120 years, exudes warmth and history. Designed to allow soft sunlight to filter in, it reflects a Japanese sensibility that finds beauty in the subtle shifts of light and shadow.

A picturesque courtyard, showcasing the distinct elegance of each season from lush greenery to vibrant autumn foliage, along with unique sculptures by international artists such as Shintaro Tanaka and Colin K. Okashimo, adds further color to the space.

Beyond the Arrival Lobby lies a lounge area divided into three zones: The Lobby Lounge, The Library, and The Bar. A "veranda" runs along the windows connecting these zones, offering an expansive space with views of the verdant garden, Lake Chuzenji beyond, and the surrounding mountains including Mt. Nantai.

The Library, situated centrally within the lounge area between two fireplaces, features a large table crafted from walnut and comfortable sofas, perfect for quiet reading. The Bar, located at the far end of the lounge area, offers a selection of meticulously chosen whiskies from around the world and original cocktails. A floor-to-ceiling dedicated shelf, adorned with handcrafted ceramic tiles, displays amber-hued whisky bottles like works of art, creating a chic and tranquil evening ambiance. Additionally, approximately 20 art pieces are curated throughout the lounge area, including works that gain depth and texture over time, expressing the Japanese appreciation for the beauty of aging.

Furthermore, the 94 guest rooms, including the 277m2 The Ritz-Carlton Suite, each feature a private balcony designed for panoramic views of the adjacent Nikko National Park. The interiors are unified by elegant, subdued color palettes, while delicate sliding doors, inspired by Kanuma kumiko, a traditional Tochigi Prefecture craft, add detail and presence through the play of light reflecting off their intricate patterns, showcasing meticulous attention to detail throughout.

The lounge area, designed to evoke a veranda, can be configured in various ways using Japanese-style sliding glass doors. It can be expanded to connect seamlessly with the bedroom and balcony for a spacious feel, or sectioned off to create a private, separate space, offering versatile arrangements.
