Princess Cruises Announces Results of its "International Travel" Awareness Survey.
As tourism restarts in various regions and restrictions on international travel begin to ease, Princess Cruises has released the results of a survey on attitudes toward "international travel." The survey polled 500 men and women aged 20 to 60 nationwide regarding their future plans for international travel. It revealed what travelers seek for international trips in 2023 and beyond, including preferred vacation destinations and perceived barriers to overseas travel.
■ 49.8% Want to Travel Abroad
When asked, "Assuming the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, would you like to travel internationally in 2023 or later?" 49.8% responded, "Yes."
■ Top Reason for Wanting to Travel Abroad: "To Experience the Extraordinary"
When asked why they want to travel abroad, 64.7% cited "to experience the extraordinary," 59.8% "to experience a foreign atmosphere," and 42.2% "to see or do things unique to the destination."
■ "Seaside Resorts" Are Overwhelmingly Popular!
When asked about their preferred vacation destinations, regardless of season or whether domestic or international, over half (54.4%) chose "seaside resorts." This significantly outranked other options such as "mountain resorts" (12.4%), "cities" (18%), and "rural countryside" (12.8%).
■ Barriers to International Travel: Weak Yen and Safety Concerns
While approximately half expressed a desire to travel abroad, the survey also revealed that some people are hesitant. Beyond concerns about COVID-19, respondents identified "safety concerns" (42.8%) as the primary barrier, followed by "rising prices due to the weak yen" (40%), and "language barriers" (38.4%). These findings highlight anxieties related to the current weak yen, the impact of the conflict in Ukraine, and safety during their stay. The rapid depreciation of the yen, in particular, is likely contributing to the hesitation, as it increases the cost of dining and shopping abroad, potentially explaining why only 49.8% are eager to travel internationally.
■ Enjoy International Travel Without Worrying About the Weak Yen: Cruise Vacations!
Regarding cruise travel, which allows for time spent in "seaside" locations—the top choice for vacation destinations—53% of respondents felt it offers an "extraordinary experience," while 51.4% perceived it as "expensive," and 41.6% thought they could "spend an elegant time." Although cruises offer the "extraordinary experience" many seek in international travel, cost appears to be a significant barrier. Despite the perception of high prices, Princess Cruises offers luxurious cruise experiences at reasonable prices, with some plans starting from around ¥10,000 per night.
Addressing the "weak yen," a major hurdle for international travel, Princess Cruises' "Princess Standard" (cruise fare) basic plan, paid in Japanese yen, includes transportation, meals, and accommodation. Furthermore, the "Princess Plus" plan adds three services: "Beverage Package," "Free High-Speed Wi-Fi MedallionNet," and "Crew Appreciation (gratuity)." The new "Princess Premier" plan, introduced in July 2022, includes these three services plus two more: "Two Complimentary Specialty Dining Meals" and a "Photo Package." Consequently, these plans minimize the use of foreign currency compared to typical international travel, allowing guests to enjoy cruises without being significantly impacted by the weak yen. Regarding "safety concerns," Japan-originating cruises depart from Japanese ports and visit destinations relatively close to Japan, such as South Korea and Taiwan, offering a secure travel experience.
For "language barriers," Princess Cruises' Japan-originating cruises feature Japanese-speaking staff onboard, and menus and signage are also provided in Japanese. Additionally, shore excursion tours are available at port destinations, allowing guests to explore with confidence and without language concerns.
