Honoring the Past, Embracing the New
Aman is a collection of resorts offering heartfelt hospitality, akin to being in a private residence, and luxurious experiences.
In November 2019, Aman's third property in Japan will open. AMAN KYOTO is situated in a beautiful forest and garden at the foot of Mt. Takagamine, part of the Shogetsuyama range in the northern part of Kyoto. This area is also known for having been an artistic hub in the early Edo period, home to Hon'ami Koetsu, the founder of the Rinpa school of art.
With numerous temples renowned for their tea houses and gardens, such as Kinkaku-ji, Koetsu-ji, Genko-an, and Shojo-ji, it is an ideal location to immerse oneself in Kyoto's artistic culture.
The site spans approximately 24,000 square meters. The forest and garden were nurtured over many years by a former owner who dreamed of creating a textile museum. This delicate natural environment will now be preserved by Aman.
In early summer, vibrant green maple leaves flourish, while in autumn, they turn a beautiful crimson. The secluded, modern architecture harmonizes with nature, creating a landscape unlike any other. This is the essence of Kyoto's renowned aesthetic: honoring the past while embracing the new.
The architecture is by Kerry Hill Architects, who also designed Aman Tokyo and Amanemu. The design thoughtfully harmonizes with the beauty of the natural gardens. The property comprises an arrival pavilion, a living pavilion (all-day dining), a restaurant pavilion (Japanese cuisine), a spa pavilion, four accommodation pavilions with 24 guest rooms, and two pavilions housing two-bedroom villas.
All 26 guest rooms elegantly blend traditional Japanese inn aesthetics with modern sensibilities, unified in a style that maximally respects the natural landscape. All furniture and lighting are original designs created specifically for Aman Kyoto.
The artisanal crafts in each room, the views from the rooms, and the cypress wood bathtubs all contribute to creating a serene yet extraordinary atmosphere.
The signature restaurant in the restaurant pavilion offers Japanese cuisine crafted with carefully selected seasonal ingredients from Kyoto. The all-day dining area, featuring an open terrace, serves Western dishes, afternoon tea, Kyoto's obanzai-style meals, and tea. Guests can also enjoy picnics outdoors with light meals served in bamboo baskets.
The Aman Spa, featuring natural hot springs, offers treatments using natural ingredients that have been cherished by the Japanese for centuries, such as Uji tea, Tamba black soybeans, local sake, cold-pressed camellia oil, silkworm cocoons, and gold leaf, all known for their beauty and health benefits.
Vladislav Doronin, Chairman of Aman, commented, "The opening of Aman Kyoto, following the success of Aman Tokyo and Amanemu, fulfills our commitment to Japan and our desire to further enrich our 'journey' here. Aman Kyoto, with its stunning design realized by the late Kerry Hill and his team, expresses Aman's philosophy of deep respect for nature. We look forward to introducing the diverse charms of Kyoto from Aman's unique perspective and offering our guests an experience in this beautiful secret garden."

Aman Kyoto offers a place to relax both body and mind while experiencing Kyoto's history and nature. We highly recommend a visit.
