Relax at Hirahatsu Atami: A New Kind of Auberge

To a New Kind of Restaurant You Can Stay At

It’s been a while since my last post, as I’ve been hopping between places. My apologies, and hello, it’s Reiko. Lately, I’ve been feeling rather tired from constantly traveling between overseas and Japan (I’ll share more about my trips soon!). So, I decided to unwind at The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Atami, which opened at the end of last year. After all, a Japanese retreat isn't complete without a hot spring, is it?

What is a Hiramatsu Hotel, Famous for French Cuisine?

The inn where I spent a relaxing time this time is The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Atami. Yes, Hiramatsu is known for its restaurants nationwide, and it has been opening hotels one after another, starting with Kashiwajima in Mie Prefecture last summer, followed by Atami and Sengokuhara. What's unique is that it's an auberge-style 'European inn' where you can enjoy Hiramatsu's French cuisine at a hot spring inn. It's a place where you can spend a blissful time in a luxurious setting where Japanese and Western elements blend, while savoring French cuisine. It's an inn where you can make new discoveries.

A Luxurious Sukiya-style Residence with Ocean Views

The Hiramatsu Hotels & Resorts Atami is located on a hill in Atami, not far from Atami Castle. The lounge, restaurant, and special suites have been renovated from a former residence in the traditional Japanese sukiya-zukuri architectural style. From the wooden balcony, you can see the beautiful ocean stretching out, with views of the Izu Peninsula, Oshima Island, and the Miura and Boso Peninsulas. The exclusive feel is enhanced by the fact that there are only 13 rooms in total. Two of these are special sukiya-zukuri suites, spacious rooms with open-air baths. Personally, I also appreciate the Japanese-style rooms with beds. The newly built guest room wing is Western-style, offering the security of an inn combined with the convenience of a hotel – truly the best of both Japanese and Western worlds. All rooms have hot springs and ocean views, a luxurious design. The beds use 'Regalia,' a premium mattress jointly developed by Otsuka Furniture and the American mattress manufacturer Kingsdown! You'll sleep deeply.

A Marriage of Superb Views and Exquisite Cuisine

When traveling, the food served at your accommodation is a significant part of the experience. Especially when staying at a hot spring inn, where lounging around the premises is a luxury, you want to savor the meals there. If the accommodation is great but the food is disappointing, the trip can be ruined. Hiramatsu, with its restaurant origins, naturally offers excellent cuisine! The authentic French dishes served in the sukiya-zukuri dining room create an illusion of being at a European auberge. The restaurant focuses on local ingredients, with Chef Ken'ya Miura preparing fresh, regional produce. What's surprising is that even a full French course doesn't feel heavy. The dishes, which highlight the natural flavors of freshly caught seafood and vegetables through skillful preparation and exquisite sauces, are easily finished, and they pair perfectly with the selected wines. I must visit another Hiramatsu inn next time!
