One Group Per Day Only

While traditional Kyoto machiya houses are a defining feature of the city's architectural landscape, many are falling into disrepair or becoming vacant. Tesssen is a charming inn that has been meticulously renovated using both traditional techniques and modern technology to make these old houses suitable for accommodation. Naturally, the facility meets Japan's stringent ryokan standards for hygiene, fire safety, and earthquake resistance.

As it is a single machiya house, only one group, with a maximum of six guests, can stay per day. While check-in and check-out are self-service, staff are available via a dedicated phone line for support at any time. Meals are not included in the accommodation fee, but the inn has partnered with renowned Kyoto restaurants, which are often difficult for walk-in customers to access, adding another layer of appeal.

The location is in the Omiya Gojo district, an area that has remained untouched by development, yet is conveniently close to central hubs like Kyoto Station, Shijo Karasuma, and Oike. This area was once home to many Yuzen dyeing artisans, and remnants of its past, such as the drying racks for Yuzen fabric, can still be seen, preserving a streetscape that evokes old Kyoto.

The first establishment, which has now opened, is named "Tesssen," after the clematis, a flower that is both a seasonal and tea ceremony flower, evoking a refined, Japanese aesthetic with its deep indigo hue.

This initiative offers a dual benefit: preserving the machiya houses that shape Kyoto's historic cityscape while providing travelers with an experiential stay that allows them to enjoy the machiya lifestyle.
