J Jazz: A Special Edition of the Popular UK Series Focusing on Japanese Jazz, Book + CD

BBE MUSIC presents "J Jazz: Free and Modern Jazz From Japan 1954-1988," a large-format book covering the most deep, rare, and innovative jazz released in Japan between 1954 and 1988. Curated by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, the esteemed curators of BBE MUSIC's J Jazz Masterclass series, the book opens with a foreword by Japanese jazz icon Terumasa Hino.

This marks the first time a book of this scope and scale has been published outside of Japan. It is a unique collection of over 500 albums of free and modern jazz recorded and released in Japan during an era of dramatic change and constant innovation. This was a period when Japan was rebuilding from the devastation of World War II, emerging as a global economic power, a technological leader, and an international cultural force.

"J Jazz" traces the evolution of the Japanese jazz scene, from the early days of modern jazz in the mid-to-late 1950s, through the hard bop and modal jazz of the 1960s, to the free jazz, fusion, post-bop, and jazz-funk of the 1970s that opened Japanese jazz artists to a new global audience. It also covers the mid-to-late 1980s, a period that paved the way for contemporary jazz generations.

Over 500 full-color album jackets from leading Japanese jazz artists, alongside rare independent releases, tell a story of constant change and musical exploration. "J Jazz" includes profiles of major record labels such as East Wind, Frasco, King Records, and Nippon Columbia, as well as important independent labels like Three Blind Mice, ALM, and Aketa's Disk. It also features interviews with renowned jazz photographer Tadashi Naito, pianist Toru Aizawa, leader of the totemic spiritual jazz album "Tachibana Vol 1," and Mats Gustafsson, a free jazz record collector and jazz musician.
Furthermore, the book includes a chapter on albums by non-Japanese artists released exclusively in Japan, showcasing rare and valuable releases from artists such as Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Mal Waldron, Steve Lacy, and Art Blakey. "J Jazz" also features Japanese jazz charts curated by global jazz DJs including Gilles Peterson, Toshio Matsuura, Paul Murphy, Shuya Okino, and Yoshihiro Okino. The specialized content includes a feature on "obi" (the paper strips on Japanese album releases) by Yusuke Ogawa, a record dealer and expert in Japanese jazz, and an article on Japanese Blue Note albums.

Spanning over 300 pages, "J Jazz" includes a detailed introduction that contextualizes the music, narrating the story of Japan's fascination with jazz since before the war. It also provides biographical information on many key artists who shaped the post-war Japanese jazz scene, including Sadao Watanabe, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Masabumi Kikuchi, Masahiko Togashi, Terumasa Hino, Yosuke Yamashita, Fumio Itabashi, Masayuki Takayanagi, Takeo Moriyama, and Isao Suzuki.
