Alva Noto's Latest in the Series, "Xerrox Vol. 3"

Ryuichi SakamotoThe latest installment in the series by German sound artist Alva Noto, known for his collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto, "Xerrox (Xerrox) Vol. 3," will be released on Sunday, April 26th. Subtitled "Towards the Cosmos," this marks the long-awaited return of the Xerrox series after approximately five years.

Sounds Like a Fantasy Journey Through Landscapes Seen in Dreams

Sound artist Alva Noto was born in Karl-Marx-Stadt, East Germany, in 1965. He has traversed diverse fields such as contemporary art and media art, hybridizing electronic sounds and visual art to create his unique, microscopic perspective on the creative process.

The Xerrox series, planned to comprise five installments, is a body of work Noto has developed based on the process of copying (reproduction). "Xerrox Vol. 1," released in 2007, was subtitled "Old World," followed by "Towards a New World" for "Xerrox Vol. 2" in 2009, and now, after five years, "Towards the Cosmos" for this latest release.

"Xerrox Isola," the sixth track on the album "Xerrox Vol. 3"

For this work, Noto sampled sounds recorded during transit, such as those from airplanes, airports, and cars. By significantly transforming these everyday sounds to create new sonic textures, the original source material becomes almost unrecognizable. In essence, the concept is that a copy of the original becomes an original in itself.

Inspired by memories of films he watched as a child, such as "Solaris" and "Journey to the Center of the Earth," this work unfolds with sounds that evoke a fantasy journey through landscapes seen in dreams. Noto himself describes it as "a cinematic soundtrack for a film that doesn't actually exist."

Noto has consistently presented works that fuse visual art with electronic sound, focusing on natural science and its structures, and has participated in exhibitions worldwide.
