MUSIC | Shuya Okino Launches New Project 'KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET'

MUSIC | Shuya Okino's New Project

KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET 'MISSION'

KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET is a new project launched by DJ/music producer unit Kyoto Jazz Massive to mark their 20th anniversary. It's an acoustic jazz unit that expresses the "now" of jazz, inspired by the modal jazz of the 1960s Blue Note era. Their debut album, 'MISSION,' was released on April 15th.

Connecting Past and Present, Illuminating Jazz's Tomorrow

The members include Yusuke Hirado of quasimode, Shinpei Ruike who participates in DCPRG and Naruyoshi Kikuchi's Dub Septet, Ken Kurihara of Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro,Toshio Matsuura Presents HEXand Katsuhito Koizumi, who participates in ',' and Masanori Amakura, known as the drummer for Jazztronik. This project brings together rising musicians from Japan's jazz and club scenes. The album also features two tracks with guest saxophonist Naruyoshi Kikuchi.

This is not danceable jazz, nor is it dance music influenced by jazz. It is contemporary jazz that has passed through club music as a modern art form. Taking 1960s jazz from artists like John Coltrane and Miles Davis as inspiration, this endeavor can be seen as a re-evaluation of modern jazz and the hard bop era. The recording was done entirely live. You can experience the sound created by the communication between the musicians' performances. Rather than simply covering past songs in a club music style, it reinterprets them with a modern sensibility, focusing on four themes: extraction, circulation, fusion, and improvisation, having digested and absorbed the techniques of dance music.

KYOTO JAZZ SEXTET 'MISSION' Album Trailer

For their debut album, 'MISSION,' they selected seven classic tracks from the Blue Note label and reinterpreted them with a modern essence. The album also includes a cover of 'Eclipse,' a hit track by Kyoto Jazz Massive that gained popularity in clubs worldwide. The project explores the points where authentic 1960s jazz and contemporary club jazz converge.
