Vol. 8 "Unmet Medical Needs" by i-dep
“10 SOUNDS OF LIFE SCIENCE” is a web content project that uses music to express the characteristics of the research and development-driven life science company, Kyowa Kirin, making its business more accessible. The theme for the eighth installment is "Unmet Medical Needs." The work is by i-dep, the music project of musician Hiroshi Nakamura.
Text by IWANAGA Morito (OPENERS)
A Mission to "Deliver"
Across the globe, there are diseases for which no cure exists, and conditions for which satisfactory treatment cannot be provided. The medical needs for these diseases, for which treatment methods have yet to be developed, are referred to as "unmet medical needs." Kyowa Kirin has made it its mission to address these unmet medical needs and is fully committed to enhancing its research and development capabilities, particularly in antibody therapeutics.
A recent example is the antibody drug "Poteligeo," launched in 2012 for the treatment of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL). This drug utilizes our proprietary "POTELLIGENT®" technology, which enhances antibody function. It took approximately 16 years from the start of research to the launch of Poteligeo. Through the sustained efforts of all involved in drug discovery and the inspiration of dedicated researchers, it was finally brought to the world as a medicine after many years.
For the eighth installment of "10 SOUNDS OF LIFE SCIENCE," i-dep has created a song on the theme of unmet medical needs. i-dep felt a strong resonance with Kyowa Kirin's commitment to developing antibody drugs in unexplored fields, driven by a sense of mission. Rather than prioritizing efficiency, profit, or scale, the company conducts research to meet the needs that genuinely exist. Similarly, in the music world, there are artists who dedicate themselves to niche areas far from the mainstream market. What drives them is undoubtedly a sense of mission to "deliver."
The completed song is titled "Life Should Be Life." Born from a pure sense of mission to help others, the music evokes the earnest dedication of its creator. It is a transparent ambient house music piece, featuring rhythms that convey the pulse of life, piano melodies, and a development that uses the word "Life" as a medium. On the "10 SOUNDS OF LIFE SCIENCE" webpage, the song is currently available for streaming on SoundCloud and for download for a limited period of one month.

i-dep
i-dep is a music project by Hiroshi Nakamura, who works as a producer, songwriter, and DJ. Launched in London during the millennium, he deepened his connections with artists like Gota Yashiki and produced music with Ellen Nashimento. His releases on Italy's "IRMArecords" received high acclaim both domestically and internationally. Upon returning to Japan, he gathered street musicians and formed a band. Since disbanding the band in 2009, he has returned to his solo project. In addition to live performances at major domestic festivals, including his own "festa de i-dep" and "SUMMER SONIC," his performances at "South By Southwest (SXSW)" have also been well-received. In 2011, he established his own label, "Shin Factory, Inc.," advocating for free and global activities that transcend conventional boundaries.
