“I'm Proud to Be Japanese”

Starting this time, "Jazz Hip Jap" is a discovery project that shines a spotlight on world-class works by Japanese jazz musicians, aiming to evoke nostalgia for jazz fans and a sense of freshness for new generation listeners.

Terumasa Hino | City Connection

Terumasa Hino
City Connection

For our inaugural feature, we present the undisputed pride of Japan, jazz trumpeter Terumasa Hino. Active on the front lines for half a century since the 1960s, he remains a hip star who continues to face music with unwavering dedication and challenge. In the mid-1970s, he moved to the United States, collaborated with artists like Horace Silver and Gil Evans, and released the 1979 album "City Connection," which included the tracks "Samba De-La Cruz" and "Send Me Your Feelings." The album was also released in the US, where he was based.

His popularity in Japan was so immense that even as a child living in a small provincial town, I would hear his music on television. Then, in the mid-1980s, the rare groove movement that swept London led to a reappraisal and surge in popularity for many funk, jazz-funk, soul, and fusion works as dance music. Naturally, his music also garnered renewed attention, particularly among younger generations, from his early works like "Snake Hip" (69) and "This Planet Is Ours" (78) to "Merry-Go-Round" (81), and the two tracks introduced this time.

As DJs, we take pride in being Japanese whenever we play these tracks overseas and see people respond with such enthusiasm.

Although I haven't had the chance to meet him yet, I would love to collaborate with him now, at the age of 70, when he is brimming with energy. In this way, TOKYO MOON will introduce works by the pioneers who passed the baton to the next generation, so please look forward to it.
